New lighting system
Hey all since the Beyond update we got the new lighting system and color changes and i really hate it.
They only thing that looks good is when your inside planet rings, that looks great with the new fog or particals.
The colors everywhere look much more cartoony now and i think it really messed the game up.

Is there any way to change back to the old color system?

edit.
Do you guys like it better?

I like the new colors. Personally i don't think the colors look cartoony, they look punchier though.
It's not all good for example some stations like Agriculture look worse now but overall i like the new colors.

You should be able to tone it down a bit using post-processing injectors like reshade or edfx

You can try altering the tone map.

The tone mapping tool was put into ED profiler, but was recently taken out because Fdev disabled that feature.
Thanks for your suggestion tho

Well it may have changed but the graphicsconfiguration xml still contains many lines related to this...

<HDRNode> <KeyValue>0.500000</KeyValue> <HistogramSampleWidth>60.500000</HistogramSampleWidth> <ExposureThreshold>1.000000</ExposureThreshold> <Percentiles>0.010000,0.540000,0.999000</Percentiles> <ExposureType>0</ExposureType> <HistogramMode>2</HistogramMode> <ManualExposure>-0.500000</ManualExposure> <ShoulderStrength>0.15000</ShoulderStrength> <LinearStrength>0.5000</LinearStrength> <LinearAngle>0.1000</LinearAngle> <ToeStrength>0.2000</ToeStrength> <ToeNumerator>0.02000</ToeNumerator> <ToeDenominator>0.3000</ToeDenominator> <LinearWhite>11.2000</LinearWhite> </HDRNode> <HDRNode_Reference> <PrototypeLightingBalancesEnabled>1</PrototypeLightingBalancesEnabled> <UseCompute>1</UseCompute> <ToneMapType>1</ToneMapType> <DisplayLumScale>164.000000</DisplayLumScale> <HistogramSampleWidth>60.500000</HistogramSampleWidth> <ExposureThreshold>0.0</ExposureThreshold> <Percentiles>0.6,0.540000,0.9000</Percentiles> <ExposureType>2</ExposureType> <HistogramMode>2</HistogramMode> <ManualExposure>-0.500000</ManualExposure> <GlareCompensation>1.3333</GlareCompensation> <ShoulderStrength>0.15000</ShoulderStrength> <LinearStrength>0.5000</LinearStrength> <LinearAngle>0.1000</LinearAngle> <ToeStrength>0.2000</ToeStrength> <ToeNumerator>0.02000</ToeNumerator> <ToeDenominator>0.3000</ToeDenominator> <LinearWhite>11.2000</LinearWhite> <ACES_A>2.51</ACES_A> <ACES_B>0.03</ACES_B> <ACES_C>2.43</ACES_C> <ACES_D>0.59</ACES_D> <ACES_E>0.14</ACES_E> </HDRNode_Reference>

Just editing some fields in graphicsconfiguration.xml like HDR and Galaxy background. Voila, my game looks like before the update maybe better. And its a pain in butt edit field by field, open the game, close the game, edit again, open, close and life goes on.. good luck

After I turned the gamma and saturation down and some other things, then I like it well enough I guess.

+1 Reshade. It'll change your life.

Does anyone know which line I need to edit to EXPAND the local star's color "tinting". I get a lot of people dislike this. I'm on the opposite end. I love when the ship is shinning in full orange or purple/green/red/blue due to Star proximity. (Sadly it only happens when you are ridiculously close to the star)

Mixed feelings.

Inside stations - usually too bright.
Dark side of planets - perfect.
Near stars - lowers HUD intensity and alters the color, interferes with readibility, colors the skybox, awful in every way.

In my Mamba the glare coming off of the right side 'nacelle' is so glaring that it completely obscures the bottom right UI indicator. Not good at all. Can't tell what my primary weapon is set to.

Overall my impressions are it is just too damn bright and saturated.

Landing in tourist 'green' stations with yellow landing indicators is terrible in every way. Can't even tell where you are supposed to land. Whoever thought mixing green trees with white station interior with yellow landing pad indicators was a good idea needs their eyes checked.

It's not perfect but I quite like a few things. While the HUD can become somewhat difficult to nigh on impossible to read, the circumstances under which it does so I find to feel "realistic".

Artistically, I think it's great, from a practical perspective, it can be a nuisance.
CMDR Emotions Jan 20, 2019 @ 10:12pm
The new lighting system allows dark-sides of planets actually be dark, I don't exactly know what is messing with you since I'm out in the void atm. If you want to tweak the settings, EDFX still works, you'll have to try and find a REShade 2.0.3 archive. Otherwise, use REShade 3.0+ to mess with it.

On a side note, the new fog thing in fog is actually very poorly hiding the swap between the high quality asteroids and the low quality lod models used in supercruise when you fly super low to rings.
