You can try missions (though i heard they are bugged) but for actual income you may want to visit Resource Extraction sites. Go for the low ones to get used to your ship then you can go to the high RES areas. Depending on the random seed, an FDL or Conda kill can net you 3-500k. Just make sure you have a kill warrant scanner on your ship and scan each target, only engage the ones marked wanted and avoid hitting everything else, especially police forces. Also, in general, be cautious with Condas, Clippers or anthing that can badly outmaneuver or outgun you.
A good place to farm resource sites is Omicron Columbae, theres a coriolis station right next to several res sites and conflict zones within 2ls (avoid conflict zones until you know what you are doing and your ship is heavily engineered).
You can view all the ships and their general use here:

For serious though, you should consider saving a little and earning Fed rank to one of Fed ships for like a mid-range fighty ship. The Vulture as suggested is a fine ship but requires more skill to fly than say, the Federal Gunship because the Vulture can't take as many punches, and deals smaller damage over time, where as a properly outfitted FGS will give you a good punch and allow you to take a few as well.
It's not a combat specialized ship, but it can hold its own against similarly sized/priced ships.
I pretty much do mostly combat missions with some light trading/passenger stuff on the side, and I'm pretty happy with the Asp for the time being having upgraded from a Cobra recently.
thanks for answering, in your own way ^^
Thanks to everyone else who answered me.
I will sell it to buy a Vulture then. I was just feeling way too heavy with that anyway. Only the 6 slot weapons and huge reenforcement capability were apealing me. Getting 1600 points in Armour with it.. thought was good. I afford killing some pirates lords with it @600k bounty.. but felt heavy all the way.
Thanks again !
Description from Alpha Orbital:
The Asp Explorer has a high jump range relative to other ships in the game and thus is quite good for use as an exploration ship. It has six weapon hardpoints and has a good turning radius for its size which makes the Asp good for more than just exploration. The Asp can act as a heavy-duty bounty hunting vessel due to its superb weapon capacity and good manoeuvrability for its size.
Pirates can also use the Asp to great effect because of the ample cargo capacity, heavy armament, long jump range and large mass (allowing it to charge its own Frame Shift Drive with minimal mass disruption while also mass disrupting the frame shift drive of most ships).
The main downside of this ship is the high initial purchase cost and high maintenance costs. Many roles that the Asp fills can be fulfilled with cheaper ships, though the Asp's performance is typically better than that of the less expensive option.
