Later on when you do long range exploration, you will need a fuel scoop attached to your ship to get fuel directly from a star.
Lol, that's not the best way to go about it. The easiest method is to just go to a station, starport or planetary outpost. You can refuel there by docking and clicking "Starport Services" and then clicking on "Refuel". Refuelling your ship will cost a small amount of credits.
Later on, you can get a fuel scoop. A fuel scoop allows you to fly near a star and fuel will be automatically collected from the star's released gases. Fuel scoops are sold at stations, starports and/or planetary outposts. Please note that not all of them will sell fuel scoops, as they will have no supply.
To get a fuel scoop, dock and go Starport Services --> Outfitting --> Optional Internal. Now a bunch of slots will come up, each with their own number. The larger the number, the more expensive things are but the better they are for your ship. For example, an A-Rated Size-4 Shield will be much stronger than an A-Rated Size-2 Shield. Just click on a slot you want to put a fuel scoop in and go to Fuel Scoops. You can now buy one. Better fuel scoops scoop fuel quicker.
If you do happen to run dry, contact the Fuel Rats - they have a website where you should be able to request assistance from another player to help refill your tank and get you flying again.
I recommend having at least a small fuel scoop on any type of ship you fly, to avoid that risk. But there are plenty who would disagree with me on that point, so do whatever is going to be best for you. :-)
