How do I hire an Engineer/How do Engineers work?
My first engineer (Felicity Farseer) messaged me and told me to visit this one system she was in, and so I did after many jumps.

After arriving on a planetary base to meet with her, the only interaction I have in the engineer workshop is to "Donate", but donate what? (There's no explanation) and upon pressing that button, nothing happens, and there's no direction on how to make it work or how I can invite her on the ship (if it's even possible). Even "Contacts" is unavailable in the hangar menu.

I have the Eagle ship. Do I need a passenger cabin?

Each engineer requires you to do tasks for them to unlock the engineering to do upgrades. For felicity you need to get 1 ton of meta alloys which you will find in Maia ~Darnielle's progress planet base. Its quite a distance to get there :)
Read what a description above the "Donate" button says. There is a paragraph of text that will tell you what she is after. I think she is after 1t of Meta-alloys, if my memory serves me right.

Make sure you equip a fuel scoop.

Here is a list of engineers:

Oh and... no one mentioned the price: its 124,966 cr - make sure you have enough.

Make sure you use your discovery scanner through all the systems you pass through. Turn in all your cartographic data to Felicity to help you rank up with her faster.

You cant invite an engineer on board your ship, she invited you to her workshop, once you give her the meta alloys she will be unlocked and you can get her to work on select parts of your ship assuming you have the materials needed to do so.
Do I need a passenger cabin?
Make sure you use your discovery

Thanks for all the info, she does say about needing Meta-Alloys. I didn't know for sure that I really had to donate that to get her to talk more or access other features.

Passenger cabin? Not at all.
You're not inviting the Engy to ride around on you're vessel, you're getting access to their VIP-only custom garage workshop.
(If that works as an analogy, at all.)

Most engineers have 3 requirements before you can access their engineering modifications.

You'll be able to see the list of them on the engineer screen, #4 (right side) near the Squadrons button while you're on your ship.

Another tip - You are allowed to 'pin' one 'blueprint' for each Engineer - this one Pinned Blueprint means that you can then access remote engineering - meaning you are able to apply that Blueprint to your ship in any starport. You don't get to add 'experimentral effects' remotely - that requires you to visit the engineer again - choose carefully what blueprint you pin - for example if an engineer does hulls and shield boosters but you are able to max your hull out AND you are staying the same ship for along time its pointless pinning the Hull blueprint - if your intending to change into another ship soon you might pin the Hull blueprint for that engineer so your able to apply the hull engineering remotely to your new ship without having to travel to the engineer.
Also - going for the engineeer that specialises in FSD asap is probably the best option as once you engineer your FSD the longer jump capability of your ship(s) make moving around space far less timeconsuming. Pin the FSD Jump Range Blueprint so you can apply it to your existing and future ships FSD's remotely.
While your getting that meta alloy it might be worth looking up what engineeering she does and what materials and/or data she requires to do what you want. (each engineer blueprint has a list of required 'ingredients') no use getting the meta alloy if then you dont have whats required to do the work.
It sounds confusing but as you get into it it really does become second nature.
Final tip - ALWAYS have rebuy for your ship and if you dont - get back into a sidewinder until you do have rebuy. So many people fall into the trap of not having rebuy and the game knows - once your in aship and your don't have credits to cover rebuy the NPC's WILL try to kill you ! Leaving you back in a sidewinder and having to start from scratch again.
Good luck and have fun!
