I wish the stick had more buttons on the stick, itself. It's seriously lacking...
Here, this is how I set up mine (roughly):

I had the same feeling when I got my t16000. But eventually I just started assigning my own button scheme and it all worked out jsut fine

One thing I did that you may want to try was to make the paddle on the throttle control my forward and back thrust. I found the main throttle itself to be too sticky and hard to precisely and quickly slide in a dogfight even after greasing it, so I just set that to the blue zone in the beggining of the engagement, then use the paddle for quick / fine control. Also, I use the index finger joystick to control my up/down and left right lateral thrusters. Being able to control those analog is awesome (combined with the forward / back on the paddle). When landing, you just set the main throttle to zero, control speed with the forward thrusters on the paddle, and let go when near the pad. Definitely not a setup for everyone, and it took me a long time to get used to it, but I really like it now.

Also remember, you can also assign combos... like use one of the buttons on the throttle hand as a 'shift' key, then all of a sudden you have twice the buttons to choose from on the main stick.

Yeah while I loved the buttons on the old logitech 3D extreme stick, its constant drifting and huge deadzones made it annoying to use, the t16000m is amazingly accurate in comparison but I did have to do some button juggling, though thanks to the razor tartarus chroma, i had a few buttons to spare. :)

I think the default profile in elite is pretty good. It's also very easy to start with. So, I started with that, and added/changed some stuff wich was more comfortable for me.

For the camera suite i use the keyboard.
You might want to look into AutoHotKey instead of Target, much easier to use imho and I honestly haven't really found a use for the advanced featues of Target so far.

There's no short cut. Just take the time to set it up yourself, then you won't actually have to memorize a button scheme. Play around with it a bit, and do some light missions.

I don't know about target profiles, but there is a very good mapping example on the thrustmaster.com support page. I used that to get me started and just customized it for myself as I went along, and decided for myself better mapping of buttons.

thanks for all your replies.
The only reason why i want to use the target software is so i can set curves. I figured out how to do all that but after i was done making the profile i loaded it up and started elite and went into options controlls but could not find my target profile in game
