I have got it in the past by doing certain scientific surface bases. Its a tad repetitive though. Go around the base, scan, relog, scan, relog.

But that is the most efficient way regardless. You can also do Jameson's crashed Cobra and cross trade for it.

Apparently megaships can also provide you with it.

Missions can work, but you need to find a system with missions you enjoy giving those rewards.

Not done it myself, but apparent they have data points you can scan with your datalink scanner.

All the best places to find firmware

Also maybe visit a material trader. If you have done a lot of combat then you should be swimming in shield scan data to trade :)

You can also get it as a mission reward.

Correct. You must scan the ship, it tells you then to scan for more information. Scan it with the data scanner to activate the data points then scan those with the data scanner. Be aware you have to be in close proximity to them to scan them. On one of the generational ships ( I think it was) you have to get in to some pretty tight places to get close enough to scan.
