Unguided missiles have SOME utility in Ground Attack scenarios, but these are rare, reserved only for certain wing missions involving base assaults.
Guided missile's one use is disabling hostile engines. One to two direct hits can usually kill a ship's drive and/or Hardpoint(s).
But it's typically not worth losing a Hardpoint slot.
If there were some serious fights in the game that required stategic weapon composition instead of just "max ur DPS" it could work, something like the Imperial Clipper is basically tailor-built to be a missile frigate.
There, I said it.
Small/medium hardpoints for missiles is just not enogh ammo. +large and you are simply better of using another gun. Missiles are fine as they are.
The actual missile? Yeah, they're poweful. But they have lots of hard counters (including just being really fast) and limited ammo.
Might be okay if they greatly reduced the basic explosive synthesis.
It's a pitty because seeker missiles are like the funnest weapons to use in the game.
Yes actually
Vote yes to Space Nukes
Why not? We're flying spaceships with megawatt power plants, shooting each other with plasma, lasers, and rail guns. We're trying to destroy each other any way we possibly can.
Atom bombs would make sense.
According to the Old Lore, the Class 4 Plasma Accelerator should have the Surface Bombardment capacity of a W-28 Nuclear Warhead, the most prolific tactical nuke in the US Arsenal, capable of leveling around 3SQ KM flat outside of hardened structures (of which the kill radius was closer to 500m)
Personally, I think Ground Assault is one of the horribly squandered opportunities of Elite Dangerous: Horizons. The ability to attack and completely destroy military installations isn't even off the cards, because a lot of surface sites are procedural anyway, and once the instance is unloaded, they disappear.
They should be nerfed to oblivion, making hull tanks useless, make them fixed only.
Yes, the blast pressure creates a high PSI pressure wave that causes most of the physical damage.
In a vacuum, a nuclear explosion is just going to deal the immediate radiation damage (Thermal, Gamma and X-ray). You're still looking at a sizeable area of extreme destruction though, as around a 250m Radius will reach temperatures similar to that of a low output star.
Point Defense bro?
You can also Silent-run and then boost to confuse the missile, with a quick breaking maneuver, you can avoid the re-seek lock by getting 500m away from it. In some cases even sending the missile back towards the person who fired it as the re-lock has no target bias (Also a great way to instigate fine/bounty to troll people)
