Osmium
Have nearly unlocked a engineer, only left she want is 10 units of osmium.

I read somewhere that for me to get it, I have to mine it..., no other way to get it.

Problem: I never toutched any aspekt of mining in this game.., so I'm a bit lost now..

I have a Phyton and a Asp Explorer, can some vet miner tell me what stuff I need to get this osmium in the simplest way..?

I'm not planning on continue mining so just the minium of things I need to get 10 osmium.

You will also need to mine a bit more in the future for another engineer. So, the experience that you gain now will be useful.

Haven’t done much besides core mining myself, but that also involves a wake scanner, which presumably helps you find asteroids rich in ore.
I’d suggest a refinery with 9-10 slots if you can get it, you only need an ‘ok’ shield (or no shield) if you’re good at avoiding interdictions. You’ll want lots of cargo space and limpets. I tend to use more than one collector limpet controller, but I have a larger ship.

Other than that, I guess I’d suggest you look online for a website that can find you a planet/ring with a high concentration of the material. The third party programs for this are getting really good.
Oh, and a detailed surface scanner might, might,, be able to reveal ore hotspots for you. I use them when core mining, since it helps me avoid the regular mining hotspots, which tend to be filled with pirates. (If you log out and in again, a pirate will often spawn near you automatically, so I suggest mining for an extended period of time, without interruption (if possible.))

If you dont want to mine, go to an extraction system and pirate it.

Edit: otherwise you'll need a mining laser, a refiner, and cargo space as a bare minimum. Collector limpets are recommended.

No can do.., never tried combat yet either.., probably woulden't end any good for me.

Here are some usefull info..

I need a refinery with 9-10 slots, even if I dont understand exactly what that is, I going to try find out.

I have a shield...allways.., i'm not a hard core ED player.

Why do I want's so much cargo space and limpets.., I'm only looking for 10 osmium?

And wich limpets you talking about, arent there different clases of limpets?

Please rember I never toutched mining ingame so when u vets start beeing "whery technical" you loose me..

So I need a Refinery and some limpets(witch type of limpets?)

I guess I need some kind of mining laser or something.., what are they cald?

So I can surface mining for this osmium, don't need to do core mining?

Can't you trade some rank 5 materials for Osmium?
xPEDx Jan 28, 2020 @ 5:17am
you need collector limpet controller , then buy the limpets on the advanced maintenance screen , the refinery will have the number of bays 9-10 depending on the size you buy, if you only want one item (osmium) then you dont really need 9-10 bays , as they are very expensive , just buy what ever refinery you can afford . use the limpets to scoop up the ore you shoot from the asteroids with the mining lasers when you find one that has what you need . dont forget to open your cargo scoop .

Edit...
A Prospector limpet controller can tell you what an asteroid has, when fired it it. So also worth having for quickness . all limpets are the same , its just the controller that determines what it will do, so buy as many as you want.

Osmium is not an engineering material (even that it sounds like one), it's a cargo. Hence it can't be traded for other mats.

Oh, ok. I'm not fully into engineering so I just suspected its an engineering material. Didn't read the OP properly.

No problems! There are always new things to learn, that's what makes it fun. :)

Sounds like you have it all figured out. Now you just have the trial and error part. I've personally forgotten where I found the material, but it was in a planet's ring. I tried a few different planets before realizing each area is made of different materials, with different 'reserve' levels. You can find third party programs using google, which show you the best places to mine.

Thanks for the info guys.

Better late than never.., I finally got the time to do this mining.

Got myself a refinery and prospector & collector limpets and now I have 14 osmium in my hold.

But the trip to the engineer is super long.., over 21.000ly from Sol where I am and that I don't have the time for now.

So what happens if I change ship now to do something else instead.., do I lose my cargo or will it stay on my miner ship?

Is it not possible to store that cargo rack containing my osmium and install it later when I can take that trip.., I tried but seems I'm not allowed?

The cargo will follow you into the new ship. And if your new ship doesn't have enough of cargo space - you wouldn't be able to switch into it.

It's not possible for now. It will be possible to store it in a Fleet Carrier, when they are out in a week. If you have 5 Billions to spare, to buy one. Or if you have a friend with the Carrier, whom you can trust to keep it for you and not to sell.

Also its not a good idea to be flying around with cargo on you. Unless you like the attention from pirates.
I would just start the trip if was you. it wont really take that long and you can log out any time and start again from there.

Ok.., thanks.

A simple kind of warehouse, like in Naval Action would have been nice to be able to buy since I never going to get that amount of money.., I have around 500 million by now..

Ok, thanks.., was just going to ask about that :)

But after installing all that miner equipment my phyton has lost around 10ly jumprange, and that engineer upgrades mining stuff..

So do I have to drag those 2 lasers, refinery and 2 limpets controllers with me all the way to her with 44ly jumprange instead of 54 without, or can I upgrade those 5 items from "home" after I return back home?
xPEDx Jun 3, 2020 @ 6:04am
You can store modules in any station, i would go as light as possible to make more jump range. if you just want to go there and back without fighting then dump everything you can . Keep a shield. but no need for weapons or ming equipment, you can re fit all this when you return . OR you can have them transfered to another station giving time to arrive.
