And later, when I've established that Steam is the cause, what do I do to get the original old configuration back?
Later:
When starting ED directly with the launcher, I can only find the generic joystick. My Saitek is not displayed as an option, although it has been recognized, configured and calibrated by Windows. But then it doesn't work in the program. I also remember that I had many more options to configure all the joystick keys. For example, I could configure the side thrusters much easier. Meanwhile, I think ED's programmers have changed something. Maybe the joystick defaults aren't being properly adopted from the Windows configurations..
What else can I try?
Medt
frontier never bothered to add in a system that auto detects what you use.
They made a preset of options which don't help at all
so just pick the generic joystick then from there check each of the button assigned
make sure they are correct and you can make adjustments which you will be doing yourself
just manually set the joystick buttons to what you want.
This shouldn't have been made difficult for you i am sorry you get people that make things difficult for you.
If you need more help just ask. I've played this game when it was released and for anyone to blame steam cause steam only sells the game and is a launcher for them they don't have anything to do with games in this sense at all.
The controller support is frontier they made changes.
Unless you are using a console controller support no longer will be supported on PC/MAC
which kind of does suck but again it has nothing to do with steam they only sell the games.
Medt question
did you alter any of the text files in the ed directory? if so you might need to delete them and then do a check integ file on the game.
cause controller support with a PC has also been an on and off issue with elite dangerous.
again you can try and manually input the key binds yourself and see if that will work.
Of course I'd much rather use a joystick for flying than the keyboard or my gamepad.
And please remember that I want to play the game in VR, so it's not very easy for me to see any keys on the keyboard. ;)
I'm sorry if I've caused any problems here. I'm just looking for solutions to my problem.
