What I can tell is:
If you can land all the shoots, they are deadly, the shoots spread a little, but the trick is to time it, wait for the moment that the enemy ship loses momentum.
I let my Elite Pilot fly it, work pretty well, miss some shoots, but land most of them.
But take care with two things:
1: they can overheat if you shoot too much, and they will get damaged badly by it. I control it by just don't shooting all the plasmas, the temps will stay on more or less 90-95% when you end shooting if you don't shoot all of them.
2: They are extremely fragile, its serious, THEY WILL GET DESTROYED if you overheat to much, the game is really dodge everything.
My pilot seems to fly them different, with the imperial fighter, he just circle them with the beams. With the Trident, he fly on jousting.
I can't talk about the others, didn't try them yet.
The trident can delivery a good damage, but only if it land most shoots.
In resume, i think the Trident is pretty good, but in difficult scenarios, I thrush my imperial fighter more. I can't talk about the damage of it against thargoids scouts or interceptors, didn't try them yet.
