If your trying to get into your friends instance all you need to do is Wing (group) with them. If the instance is maxed it won't let him in untill someone leaves. Which most just join the other players. This game very, very, rarely will require you to try and get into a particular instance.
IE. Community Goal and everyone there want's to do a group photo. Or large multi-Wing player vs player combat. Which is something you would need to join a group to even find.
Over a year ago a group managed to get over 100 people in an instance (away from NPCs, out exploring), but that melted the servers :D
That's not how it works.

Got to 53:30 in that video for an overview
Pfftt.. It's litterally what I said.
He even gives two demo's on how it works. Your instance based. Nothing more. How you become is not what his question was. He asked how many players. Not how it works at the Dev level lol. Still stands 33 players per instance and the 33rd man creates a new for entering players.
But thanks for the info that no one was asking about!
Edit: And blocked for being snarky. Don't have time for that especially coming from a forum mod..
As Agony_Aunt said, there is only a soft limit so you can have many more than 32 in an instance.
As someone who plays the game I've only seen that pre-steam and outside the Bubble. Which is a nothing burger...
Your making it sound like more than 32 is somthing that happens outside once a year. OP its 32. You'd be hard pressed to ever see anymore than that. Plus with FDev's P2P networking you'd be lucky to see 20 lol..
LOL at lol.
Let's be frank, even with perfect networking, most of the time you wouldn't see 20 people in most systems. The only exceptions might be in systems like Shinrarta and CG systems.
