Free Camera
Hi ,

Can someone help me with the free camera controls. I am probably missing something .. but why is the camera not anchored to your ship??? Why is it so difficult to get a third person view of your ship and pan / zoom around it as it flys along???

I’m not super good at using the camera suite either, but what I can say on the subject is that there are literally a dozen or more keys to bind for the suite that aren’t bound by default

Free camera is free. The other one is not. Play around with it. Set your key binds. All will be good in your bubble.

The camera is actually locked to your ship by default... you unlock it by hitting Numpad 0 (default)...

Yes but whilts the camera is locked to your ship you cannot freely pan and zoom around your ship... you are reliant on the fixed camera positions..

As a not I set free cam controls to be the same as flying the ship. I, free cam I basically fly the camera.

You can, except can't control your ship when in free camera mode. Look at the keys bottom left of your screen.

Thats how I do it (pretty much) I set it up as if it were a tiny little space drone

I recommend going to options and unbinding all default camera controls (they are horrible), then rebuild something that works from there.

FDev doesn't want you flying around in 3rd person mode. It's clunky and difficult by design.

yeah I've never tried "getting good" at it becasue I frankly don't want to, but when it was released I managed to dock using the cam mode in a station first time without any real difficulty.

It used to be impossible to fly and move your camera, I'm honestly surprised more people haven't "gotten good" at flying third person

No, I did it just to taunt a friend who likes to fast land his Python :steammocking:

I map my camera controls to my mouse higiher numbers but if you have a standard setup you can use you numkey to set up locking zoom pan etc and its like a dedicated section of the keyboard just for camera controls to make it simpler to navigate on, make sure you look though the controls and think about what you want. I use 5 for free camera, 7/9 for locks and the rest is pretty standard in terms of 8624 for panning.
