Trouble finding story mission
So I started this up and tried flying around a bit to maybe get a waypoint or a communication from a story NPC or something like that but I haven't seen anything yet do I need to restart or can I just go to a specific system to start the story or what

Just like the X series of games thare are missions to taxi, to haul, and to eliminate a target. Your individual efforts will have no effect on the game world. Any progress you made with a major faction decays rapidly. The game suffers from Skyrim leveling, so if you make the mistake of ramping up your combat rank; you're going to get intercepted by tougher and tougher NPCs that you had been leeching kills off of in Resource sites, but not have the ship hardware or player skill to deal with them.

we have story missions?
There are no story NPCs in this game - you make your own story by living a pilot's life in the Galaxy.

There are missions, but they are not connected to each other, and they don't make a story.

There is no "story" but as long as your allegiance is with Aisling Duval everything will be alright.

There are no story missions per say, but the story is basicaly about you trying to survive through the grind and repeating the same mission and activities over and over until you discover the definition of insanity...

The story only happens between npcs as a backdrop to what your doing. Sometimes missions have a tangental connection to it.

Like one of the powerplay leaders offering a reward from bringing them slaves so they can free them since they are against slavery as a part of a wager with another powerplay leader who wanted to see how many pilots would do it instead of bringing the slaves to them who was for slavery in the Empire.

Are you perhaps talking about the training missions?

No I went through the tutorial program that was launched as a seemingly-seperate game, if that's what you mean Henry.

I was under the mistaken impression that there was some semblence of a guided mission-based storyline, akin to X2/X3 gameplay. I've since determinated this to be a completely freeform experience, more closely resembling something like Kenshi or No Man's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

As is i'm having a hard time starting up. There's a huge amount of information thrown at you from the start. I have untold thousands of hours invested in the X3's even without a step into the questlines, so I figure i'd be able to eventually full-dive Elite as well...

I'm considering buying an oculus rift and this is highly recommended for that platform, so that may tip the scales.

Thank you all for your replies.

You say there is no main story mission. What about discovery of thargoids & hidden crash sites & bases? I remember and still videos of some players decoding signals finding out it's a map then finding an alien crash site then alien base, that turned out to be thargoids which led to game upgrade to basic targoind release. There are people now working out what they are doing. So in a realistic way no main plot, you have to piece together what you hear & see in the game like real life

Yep, but that's not "the story", per se. Not something that you have to follow, to progress in the game. It's more like the real life, just as you have said.

We've had a couple I think. Pailin had a few, Ram Tah has 2. That's all I can think of.
