that said Mulitcannons can be devastating when used exclusively like on a Gunship with all seven hardpoints as MCs, spin up time isnt really that bad once you've gotten used to it.
Frags can be great if you have them on a manueverable ship that can get in close and stay there in the targets blindspot and just dump grapeshot into their backsides.
Maybe try Hudson's frag cannon, the spread is lower so you have more of a chance at a distance? Haven't really used it for a while, but I I don't remember enjoy using it. Otherwise I say give the MC another go.
The alternatives, Plasma Accelerator or Railguns are heat generating beasts but also fit your bill in alpha damage. But PA is fun to use.
Also realise that the level 5 Cannon is given to you by another engineer, you just need to unlock him.
Multicannons are good, but unless you have a huge slot, or are willing to go full multicannon, they're not ideal.
Huge Multis make good "Sniping" weapons, even gimballed, when engineered to be Long-Range.
Frag Cannons are probably the best kinetic weapon, but you have to 'Git gud" and put them on the right ship.
Chieftain and Vulture are the best platforms for Frag Cannons. Try them on a Vulture with one Inced for shield stripping, and one corrosive for hull cracking. Or, go Double Corrosive (Or one corrosive and one drag munitions) on a chieftain, with lasers for shield stripping. YOu won't be disappointed, especially when you are fighting Anacondas, Cutters, Pythons and Corvettes. All of which present easy targets for Frag cannons.
Yeah, I admit that I seem to have an odd prefrence in just about any "violent" games ^^'
And just to make sure I guessed it right, those kinds of weapons can't be traded between players, is it?
Yeah, the spin up time, especially gimballed, can be confusing, since I'd worry that the MC will only fire when they are facing my target (only played for... up to a month)
As for the Frag Canons, well, I've read that the I-Courier (my current favorite Bounty Hunting/Combat Ship) is pretty maneuverable, and I tried to improve that by combining with high-grade thrusters, and leave more than half of the optional module slots empty to reduce mass. Though my ship tends to be above, or below the target ship
Oh, and FYI, it's only against PvE ships so far.
fire 6 or more rockets at once , two lock on's total of 12 rockets and no more npc.....
the only problem is they attach from behind some would kill me as the ships i like are very bad to turn.......
even a tank has its weaknesses. still a work in progress.
find what works for you and make it better.
was this recent? because ive been using it on my Huge hardpoint on my battle cutter for a few weeks and it just spells death for eagles and vipers
i just got a cutter last week only using it for passenger at the moment.
maybe i should start a cutter build post?

heres my build
guass cannons are listed as Thermal
+1 re MCs. I also read Frag cannons or Rail guns do more damage than PlasmaAs.
I have also seen a ganker use mine launchers from a SW on bigger ships quite effectively. I tried using them on NPCs last month but t'was futile for me.
