Well, Multicrew is a lot of fun. It's also a good, almost riskless way to get good with combat basics like pip management, fixed gun fighting, FA off, etc.
From a game design choice, not letting Crewed ships wing up was bad, but I think it was done for technical reasons, host layering conflicts through the instancing servers. The actual instances don't run off dedicated servers, so the computation and bandwidth burdern of Multicrew+Wings was probably too much. Where as if Elite was run off a truly dedicated server like a real MMO, it wouldn't be such a huge technological hurdle.
One thing I haven't check to see, is if Multicrew members can share wing missions. It would make the big 3 good ships to get new players tons of credits, as something like an Imperial cutter can easily solo Multicrew Assassinations.
There is so much to learn here that he feels overwhelmed in the tutorial.
Learning the basic controls I would say is enough, I would also learn how to activate the chat too so you can communicate your needs. If you are in a gunner role, make sure you communicate that you're a total noob and might need a minute to acclimate or get some tips.
There's no real penalty to the host ship as long as they lock their turrets (Something I recommend unless you are inviting people by hand) The host gets a free distributor pip, so even if you don't do anything, there's a reason to have a crewmember. Short range fighters are dirt-cheap to replace, less than a single shot of some weapons like Plasma Accelerators.
I should point out that finding a spot in another ship is sometimes pretty hard, Multicrew didn't really take off, most people are worried that someone will jump in and mess up their bounty run by attacking civilians, etc.
Cheapest ship that can pull that is the... T9 I think? Though I'd recommend at T10 for slightly more. Gonna need about 400,000,000CR to kit one out for minimal combat.
Though the Krait might fill that gap somewhat, depending on what direction FD has gone with it. I don't think it'll be a small ship, looks like it's going to be about the size of an Imperial Clipper. (Large, but agile for it's class, with a fighter bay)
Edit; i just checked last night crews report and 156 kills result in total profit of 20.66mill, highest bounty 599
