The X-Wing don't need to carry anything other than the pilot in a very slim fitting cockpit. Whereas even the Sidewiner need to haul tons of cargo.
Personally, I feel the number of seats, rather than positioning, are what define the difference. If it has more than three seats, it’s a bridge. Otherwise, it’s a cockpit.
That’s said, I’ve heard some compelling arguements that the only ships with bridges are ones that dock smaller vessels or parasites (such as SLF’s).
