yes. it used to not so old posts (or people who haven't mined in a while) will tell you otherwise. I believe it doubles the yield if you put a prospector limpet on the roid you're mining.
So you fire off your prospector and let it report back to you what is in that big rock you are looking at, then you can decide if you want to mine it or not.
the other thing is to take a long hard look at the rings of a given mining location. Look at the planet and check the composition of the rings. There are usually two rings seperated by a dark band if you look at it from the top or bottom. The "A" ring is the one closest to the planet and the "B" is the one on the outside. Check the info and you may find that the A ring is mettalic and outer ring just rocks.
