You've answered your own question and also gave the reason as to why. FD will agree with you 100%.
:)
Because that would cost money, and probably quite a lot of it?
Remember, this is not a single player game where all it takes is for the game to write another savefile on your hard drive. All your player stats have to be kept, secured, and regularly checked server-side.
Give players a second save slot, and you've instantly doubled the amount of player stat data those servers will have to deal with. It would be as if the playerbase itself had doubled overnight, except there would be no extra revenue to pay for the necessary upscaling of the server infrastructure to support that.
I'd say that's probably why they don't just give us what would be basically a second account for free.
As much as I would love a second save slot, you can't argue with the logic here. I would cost frontier a fortune to give them for free. However, I am surprised they haven't sold them in the shop they way they do everything everything else. I might be missing something but from a player perspective, you could switch characters much faster and easier than exiting the game and starting version 2. It would also save a ton of space on your hard drive because 95% of the required info is already there with your first copy. Fronteir would still make thir money as the pricepoint for a second slot could be the wholesale price they are selling the game to retailers like steam. Everyone wins.
First off, they already do exactly that...it's called buying a second account
Second, i don't know if it would be a fortune. Probably not. But even if it's a small amount, without related revenue, it would be eating off their profits. Companies don't usually do that.
Buying a second account, is different in every aspect from what I said. You have two full versions of your computer taking up double the space that would be needed and switching character would require exiting the game and restarting with copy two....so, no they don't do anything like what I suggested.
From what I've read having a second account does not require a second full install of Elite. All it requires is logging in to the launcher with the second account. NO second download or install needed.
