Elite Dangerous

Chieftain.. Is it too good?
Besides some flaws?

Three main flaws being the cost to kit out for A-rated hull tanking, weird Hardpoint sizes for what we all thought was an anti-xeno ship, and that massive glassjaw, the canopy.

It almost seems TOO good.

Pitch/Yaw is insane, jump range of @19 light years even when heavy, and enough power in the plant to run any set-up..

..But the downside.

Seeing most decent AX and Guardia weapons are currently Size Medium Hardpoints, the Chieftain looses out on potential DPS against Thargoids, and a couple of NPC aimbot rails/plasmas can shatter your canopy.

Ended up with 98% hull and a shattered canopy on it after testing it in a High Res and taking plasma spam from a couple of elite npcs. Two lucky hits and sucking void.

Surely the Hull Tanking potential is lost due to the massive window?
having 1800+ hull points means nothing when the canopy is the first thing to go.

ATM the ship reminds me of the bastard son of a Vulture & an Asp.

Module Reinforcement Packages are not optional on this thing, to protect the Canopy. I stopped having broken glassjaw once I dropped 2 in there. I don't think they "Stack" to create module immunity (Until the MRP damage soak is full) but it definitely lets me survive hull tanking.

As for if the Chieftain is too good? Probably... It's an amazing ship, though it's not very good in Jousting scenarios and is vulnerable to being forced into Jousts because of its high drift thanks to it's good thrusters but very high hullmass. Fer-De-Lance still outclasses it, but Chieftain can rip apart most ships in close quarters. So if you're up against chieftain and its insane pitch rate, your best bet is to try and keep it at a distance.

Also, Frag Cannons on this thing are insane. I want Pacifiers...

si4 module reinforcement fixes that canopy issue.

was just gonna say the same thing. I carry a size 4 module reinforcement and that canopy problem went away. and an afmu as well. and bruh. fully engineered this thing is a beast.

The AI doesn't seem to be good at flying it. First time I encountered one it was a pretty easy kill.
Fdev strengthened the canopy since this post..so it got better still :tgrin:

I actually have kind of a hard time with AI's in the Chieftain, but maybe it's because chieftain v Chieftain leads to jousts. I get forced into jousts often with FDL and FAS too tho. Chief just doesn't accelerate out of turns enough I think.

My Python chewed it up.

The odd thing is Pythons (And anacondas) are what I can kill most easily with the Chieftain, lol. But that is lolAI.

But yeah, against AI Chieftain, I can see Python ripping them apart because the AI probably tries to fight like another Python or big ship (Face tank it basically) but the real advantage of the chieftain is in its mass to thrust ratio, giving it similar handling to a Vulture with more drift. A good chieftain pilot should be able to stay on the belly or back of of basically anything larger than an Asp. (FAS/FDL are its Kryptonite though)
yeah, PvP would be all different

I tried Chieftain and didn't like it's shield strength. Yes, it comes back fast as a Bi-Weave, but every NPC hull chewing means I can stay less long in battle zone.
Still prefer to use my Python for combat, but Chieftain is indead fun ship to fly.

Btw I have better Rails aim in my Python as I often "overshoot" the target in Chieftain while I am bringing cursor towards it. It is almost too responsive and a bit shaky. In Python mouse pointer is nice and steady.

Still have to try Frag Chieftain, maybe I'll change my mind then but first I need to do some engineering to fill all slots properly.

Yep he tried to face me. I have engineered lasers with special effects from the days of old and all of them are engineered to be rapid fire. I dropped his shields with one pull of the trigger.

Remember, that canopy? It's not a weak point, it's a character flaw. Everybody needs a character flaw, right?

I like my Chieftain so far. FDL is overpriced junk, and the Python is too friggin' slow for a fighter jockey to have fun in. Now I just need to change my ship's name to Foehammer.

So why not just A rate the life support, You really don't lose that much performance and you can stay in the fight almost 30 minutes longer (depending on how far you are from the station).
