why are NPCs attacking me??

I log in, look around at a mining site, I have no bounty and no cargo.
-BOOM- 10% shields remaining!

WTF?? -Killed- WTF????

Why did an NPC ship attack me??
This is the second time this has happened this week and I'm running out of money!
I don't have any alliances I'm aware of, and the NPC didn't make any demands before attacking.

Maybe you did a mission that some other mini faction didn't like. Example: deliver data for XYZ Company. XYZ Organization is at war with XYZ Company. You get hunted. Check your inventory in the right panel and check your left panel transactions, maybe you have some cargo. If it happens again go to another system far away for a day or so. It's a crazy galaxy, be ready for anything. Just quitting a mission and much later someone comes for you.

They do not attack without reason. Cargo, bounty, mission, powerplay, hostile with one of local factions... i may have missed something, but IIRC that's it....
But were you attacked or just rammed to death? NPC ramming for no reason is a bug...

Also in system map you can check your relationship with factions to see if anyone hates you. You can check this in the station menu below Galnet and also on the mission board.

If you have done any excessive bounty hunting in that system or a neighboring system that shares factions it’s possible that you are hostile to a Faction; hostile factions attack on site, but they don’t attack without saying something

I don't think it's a mission, and I'm not pledged, I think. So maybe it's a small faction I upset while bounty hunting?

Maybe. You know loosing a fight, loosing credits, and not understanding can suck but it's also nice. It keeps the game dangerous and exciting. Imagine when you get past all suprises and learning, then you get bored a bit and start hunting fun like its becoming extinct.

What's exciting is different for different people.
I like a surprise, but I don't like a surprise that costs me a Lot of my time.
I'm grinding because the next ship I want is expensive!!
To compensate I've been storing money in assets, and storing the ships away.
It helps from time to time cause the game can't steal that money from me.

the game isnt stealing anything from you.

if you cant defend yourself from harm then you are throwing your money at the rebuy screen

I logged in and immediately got shot and died, before I was able to do a basic systems check.
Seems like stealing to me.

I didn't know what was happening, so I ran, but got killed. Zero chance to defend myself.
I never even saw the ship that attacked me.

I know I wasn't the second time, and I have no bounties on me, and I generally avoid any and all missions that would make people dislike me.
That's why I was so confused!
I specifically avoid those because I don't like loosing money to random ships.

hostile faction is all I can think of.... if you're back at the station in that system after the rebuy go to the mission screen and look at your faction rep... any of them hostile?

To be honest it sounds like you were attacked by player... either that or you were in a small ship and were simply rammed to death by boost-scanning copoconda (TBH i've seen them having fun with their C4 PA too, blowing up miners and other targets they scan for no reason, do not know if it is a bug or simply weapon malfunction or something like that), which would techincally be a bug.
Because i've never seen NPC destroy player as fast as you describe no matter what. At very least it will take them some time to scan you, even if you carry cargo into anarchy HazRES or go with bounty into HighSec HighRES which are basically worst-case scenarios.
