The other option was a monthly subscription. The devs put it up to a vote back when the game started and that's what the players chose. It would be nice to be able to use credits, but most people aren't fussed over it. It's a way to support the devs if you want to, but it's not necessary.
Thankfully there aren't any micro-transactions for things that affect gameplay (modules, ships, etc.).

Exactly! I'm more than happy to buy a skin or such every once in awhile in order to support the game. Monthly subscriptions are awful.
A small tip is to pay attention to the currency exchange rates. It's usually (slightly) cheaper to buy things under their price in pounds than their listed usd price. Not sure if that's something you can do with Steam, though, or how often they update their pricing (to more accurately reflect the exchange rates).
I wasn't aware of that vote back in the day. If those were the two options then i'm also glad they went down this route.
I still think the prices are a little on the high side though.
