What's up with the damage system?
I'm probably doing something wrong, but I feel like I can hardly deal any damage. with my FDL, I've got 2 beam lasers, 2 multicannons and 1 huge multicannon and I have to spend like 5 minutes of constant firing to finally kill an Asp.

And? Sounds right to me. It wouldn't be a fun game if people could just drop you out of SC and kill you instantly.

I assume you're using the beams to go wear down the shields then using the multicannons on the hull once they collapse.
Cause multicannons don't do much against shields when they're still active.

Since beams will hurt hull more than multicannons will hurt shields, you might be better to focus on lasers more than impact weapons.

I assume with that build you're spending all that time trying to get shields down. Try one huge beam and 4 multis, or 4 pulses and a huge multi

And if you are, for the love of all that is holy dont use turrets

What's wrong with turrets? Sure, they do less damage but probably hit more with their wider range of motion. They also let you multicrew with friends and let them shoot while you fly.

if possible. GO ENGINEER!!!!

You keeping in close range? Between lasers having atrocious range without engineering and projectiles of the multi that could be causing trouble. I do tend to have damage trouble with beam and multi though which is why I typically just slap fixed cannons on everything though, every ship does good damage

They are a total waste on a fdl. There are ships were you can make a case for turrets, an fdl is not among those.

Go 2 med multi and 1 large, Go the rest pulse, The pulse will strip the shield fast and *eng* the multi for heat and / or Corrosion .... Tango down . :)

use a different ship then a FDL its a nice ship too short of range unless you only stay in one system. a Krait MK2 will be a much better ship for new bounty hunters about the same fire power 2 mediums 3 large over the 4 mediums and 1 huge but you get a SLF that can help big time at learning how to fly vs NPCs. and for the Krait MK2 you can use 2 Medium Beams and 3 large MCs and the SLF can have the fighter with 2 beams to help with shields.

turrets on FDL are actually a valid option if you go for sustained dps, although with current meta i don't really see how fit a fdl with sustained dps built, the lower weapon damage is made up for with the wider angle and improved weapons distribution draw.

but i'm clueless as to how you play a fdl that way, that's usually a ship i use to fly extremely agressive with shield tanking, some raming and a lots of frags with that ship, but turret sounds good on it, i might want to experiment that now :>

FDL can be its own turret. Its agility is good enough to stay on target, so gimbals should be well sustaining.

Interestingly enough, I'm currently flying an AspExplorer and recently when doing courier and other delivery type missions, I've had a lot of interdiction attempts from FDL and Krait Phantoms.

So one time I just let it happen (thinking I'd just add to my own tally!) and I didn't check who it was first. It happened to be and FDL, his first pass took out my shields, then it took another 30 seconds or so to get down to around 30% before I managed to slip away. Fortunately I was close to the station and I survived.

Another time it was a Krait and he made several attempts to interdict me and I barely escaped again.

So the bigger and better ships are certainly capable of dealing fast damage to you. I would ask what grade of weapons do you have? Perhaps you need to upgrade another step or two, or reconsider your weapons mix, as the guys above have suggested?

1. Engineering
2. Some things are better than other things at certain things.

FDL isn't a DPS machine, it's fast, decently protected, maneuverable, can do damage, looks better than most, etc.
