Exploring - Laden/Unladen Jump Range?
I am trying to make a plan for choosing a good explorer ship. I have read much on the Explorer and Phantom, but I can’t wrap my brain around what is really more important for exploration: laden or unladen jump range?

neither my post or the 2 above are specifically correct
but for safety sake you use laden range, which if you have no cargo space is the same as unladen range

Neither. They're technically the same (for the basis of comparison) Your jump range will rarely be at its "unladen" value because you need X tons of fuel in the tank to even perform the jump. Broadly speaking those two ships are going to give you about the same jump range, differing by I think tenths of a light year based on "empty" builds (Phantom being slightly higher). Both are good. Usually you're talking about the modules you're bringing with you. The Explorer is certainly cheaper for the value you're going to get out of it. The Phantom has a few larger class slots you can benefit from but bear in mind that the larger the module, the more it weighs, bringing down the range you can jump.

So really, it's up to you. Here are two unengineered builds, one for each (without FSD booster). If you can get the guardian FSD booster, that'll make life so much better.

You can play a bit with shields, but they're really only there in case some muckery happens when landing on high G planets.

The current fuel in your tank is already included in both, unladen and laden ranges. So your jump range will always be at its unladen value, if you don't have any cargo loaded.

That's not the case either.
I stand corrected. I have confused 2 different statistics: unladen/current in ship's stats, and min/current/max in outfitting.
Thanks I will check those links out.
if you did a unladen jump that would be impossible as that would mean you have no fuel....

but if you want to test it out that is simple....
plot a course and jump. " see how far you go on that jump"
after that jump
plot the same course and you will see you can now jump even further.
keep doing it and you will see you will be able to jump further and further.

most people to get the max jump range out of your ship changes the core fuel tank and then add another fuel tank in your optional ...

this is a great way to get more jump range but have same amount of fuel...

it would be great to have the ability to dump excess fuel

Unladen assumes you have the absolute minimum fuel to make the jump, i.e. your fuel tank will be empty on arrival. It's the absolute maximum jump that can be made with the setup. This could be important for people trying to get to the edge of the galaxy or into one of the dark spots where the stars are far apart and returning from one isn't an issue. For any other use case, though, you want laden range.
Did some tests in-game, I stand corrected, unladen does indeed signify the max range possible.

Laden range can be misleading if you have cargo space on an explorer. For example my exploraconda with 160t cargo capacity has 59ly laden, compared to 73ly out in the field (and 76ly max).
With little or no cargo space it'll be a good enough indicator, though.

To be 100% accurate you'll probably want to just check current jump range in outfitting or ship stats in the right panel. There's also coriolis.io which is great for checking the numbers on a ship setup.
You'll want the current range with no cargo and full fuel. If your explorer is set up the way explorers are normally set up, that will be the same as the laden value, but it's safest to check.

In general, you want to err on the side of fuller fuel, because you don't want to get stranded if you run in to a few unscoopable systems, so most of the time that is the value you'll be working with. Those who are trying to travel at the very edges of the galaxy equip plasma munition railguns and use jumponium, and they might care about the unladen values, but for everyone they are almost never relevant.
go on medium or small ships. i got all large ships except cutter. if you re smaller on exploration you ll get space sickness so much later. unlike big ships.
Unladen

Anaconda flies like a brick but have the best jump range and can outfit more then enough.
(a good fuel scoop etc) (my travel snake can do +-72ly)

Diamond Explorer, nice small ship, but lack a few outfit slots.
Krait Phantom, nice ship but lack a few outfit slots

Explorer crafts usually run minimal loadouts, to conserve weight for maximising jump ranges.

there are plenty of resources that a simple search will uncover.
You can kiss me on my ASP . Btw if you want luxury go with conda , if you want basic functions go for ASP

The Anaconda turns worse than a brick, has a very limited cockpit view, and is too big to land comfortably on rough terrain planets. All of this is important, when you go exploring out there.

If you want luxury - go with the Orca. You will lose ~10Ly of the jump range, comparing to the Anaconda, but you will gain on everything listed above. The Orca is a fast turner, has a great cockpit view, and is very slim to land at places where the Anaconda wouldn't find a clearance.
