Is there anything worth mining in asteroid fields?
I'm newish to mining and it seems like all the fun is at the rings around planets

Void Opals, Alexandrite and Low Temperature Diamonds....you can easily make 30-60 Million an hour mining if you find the right rings....the things you'll need: Abrasion Blaster, Seismic Charge launcher, refinery, prospector and collector limpets, pulse wave scanner, Pristine Rings and a little luck...oh yes and slao a bunch of Cargo space with a ship to hold it all

aaand double painite hotspots...the classic laser minning, without much noise

You forgot to mention the skills that need to be learned and developed for locating good prospects and the appropriate strength for seismic charges and so on ;)
It takes a while to learn, but yes, once you're a proficient core miner then 70 mill or more per hour is easily possible.

Everyone completly missing the point of the thread.

You can occasionally find interesting stuff in astroid belts but honestly, they are pretty terrible everytime I've ever gone into one out of curiosity. I haven't put in the legwork to scour the thing but not being able to get a sense of what you'll find in advance is a huge negative.
As noted by MadArtillery, Asteroid belts are worthless.

Both deepcore mining and overlapping painite mining takes place in planetary rings.

Thanks to the guys that understood my post, lol. I never enjoyed laser mining back when I first tried it and I started doing core mining yesterday which I enjoyed much, much more. That got me thinking about asteroid fields but for now I will continue to peruse the icy rings. I made 70 million my first day which may not be much for several hours worth of work but it was fun learning and I definitely made some mistakes along the way. Hopefully Frontier will grant us a reason to visit asteroids one day but until then I will stick with rings.

What about raw materials? Is an SRV still the best? I know space mining can earn you materials, but I think it's at a lower rate...?

Correction 100 mil

Yeah, SRV mining at Geo and Bio planetary POIs is better for raw mats.

To be clear, I was initially asking about asteroid fields in particular, not rings around planets filled with large rocks that people erroneously call asteroids.

Asteroid belts are not mega profitable due to the low number of rocks.

There is kind of an exploit with them. Due to their low number its easy to spot which rocks is which and if you find a rock with a good supply of something you can get the stuff from it, log out, then back in and harvest again.

I'm not sure if this is still possible. It used to be.

Right, which is why most the people other than the guy I quoted and pointed to, must of had trouble reading what you wrote.
