How do turrets work?
Sorry - incredibly dumb question here; I'm just asking to improve my knowledge.
I recently - during my last refit - upgraded my Abrasion Blasters to a pair of turreted models. Only one activated at a time; I thought I might need the extra due to the wide displacement - so far, I haven't. The info clearly says that if a crewman is not available, they act as fixed emplacements.
I recently 'hired' a pilot because...reasons. I have no fighter bay or SLF; she's a cute blonde. Yes, I AM that shallow lol. :D
I'm just asking because talk on the forums say that turrets only work when a player is co-piloting onboard your ship. However, I've noticed that when I target a void opal encrustation the turrets DO target it. The variation has to be less than about 10 degrees, but it works.

I'm just curious - since once I amass a good fortune I intend to go for my Combat Elite rank - if Turrets work with NPC crewmen, how do Turrets differ from Gimbals in combat?

Unless i am mistaken, fixed weapons do aim, but only in a very small arc.

turreted mining gear is supposed to be used with multicrew, as for other turreted weapons there are many things to consider before using one in your ship:
- they have the weakest dmg of the 3 types fixed > gimbal > turret
- they usually offer 360º line of fire but ofc they need line of sight for that and some ships dont have the ideal hardpoint placements for that
- you may want to use turrets only on big ships such as the corvette, cutter, anaconda or the t-10 since they lack speed and manouverability to deal with smaller targets such as vipers and vultures
- the bigger the size of the turret the longer it takes for it to rotate, so keep that in mind if you want to use a turret just for the purpose of keeping pressure or applying a debuff
- in general gimball or fixed are way more effective than turrets since they are pretty situational
- also on the right panel under the "ship" tab its possible to select the firing mode to foward fire which will make it work like a fixed weapon, target only so it will only fire when u have selected a target and pressed the shooting buttom and fire at will which will fire at any hostile targets

Turrets will track the target even if it behind you. Gimbals don't.

Possibly off topic, but i just took my krait out for some combat and its two turrets were not tracking targets, they were acting almost like auto-firing fixed weapons.

I checked my right panel and they are set to attack target, not fixed (and if they were set to fixed, then they shouldn't auto-fire).

I have another couple of ships with turrets, i'll take them out next time i'm on and see if only the Krait is affected.

Anyone else noticed something like this?

Where did u put the turrets? on the 2 front medium hardpoints?

Free fire, target only, and forward fire are turret modes for default AI control.

If you wish not to have multi-crew.

EDIT 1: Someone just attempted to hack my computer but OS-114 decapitating/mincing robot caught the exception.

well i did some testing with a couple of ships and apparently turrets are not tracking properly indeed, specially vs small ships

^ ^ This, except for AX or Guardian turret weapons which must be fired by CMDR or player in MC.

apparently, for some w/e reason the turret wont be able to keep up with the target even if it is at extremely slow speeds, its not always but it happens quite often

as for the turrets on the front medium hardpoints on ur krait, thats the worse spot u can put ur turrets on that ship since FD made it so turrets cant aim "down" based on the hardpoint positioning so in the krait it will only shoot like this |_____ til like 70º down

(dont mind my mad ascii drawing skillz)

Yeah, but they used to work just fine on the Krait. Ok, maybe a bit limited in their firing arcs, but they used to track.
