Planets: First discovered by - First mapped by question.
Im out in deep space, yet to find a system or planet that hasnt been discovered, but not all the planets have a "first mapped by" tag So i though ok ill go and map the ones that dont. But these planets dont say first mapped by me after fully mapping them. Do i have to return the data before this is credited to me? Or am i misunderstanding something?

Yes, you have to return and sell the data to get your name on something.

You have to hand in the data first.

Ah ok thanks, well I'm taking a long random rout to Tir, so it may be a while :)

SO you going to colonia? Then consider getting out of main plane of galaxy, as on main axis absolute most of systems are discovered. Get somewhat up or down of plane and then go in direction you need (not directly to colonia). That way you can have really good profit with minimal effort added.

Yeah that's the plan, I'm not taking a direct rout, atm I'm heading to the right hand side of the galaxy. There's something I want to check out there, then from there I'll be heading left and up, then at some point straight to colonial. It's going to take weeks I think. Thankfully I'm in no rush.

Well iv done it, big time. Just found a system with 3 stars and 25 planets, 22 of which a landable. All with no discovered by tags. SO! What happens if some one else discovers them and hands in the data before I do? Who gets the discovered by credit?

Those who first turn it in. Dont worry, according to EDSM.net - overwhelming number of star systems are not visited at all.

One more tip. If you want to maximise your profit - you may want to set filter on your route to O B A F T G K M star types. I also add carbon, W-R and non-sequence stars,. but that is not profitable, just for sights. SOme people exclude M type starrs, as there are rarely terraformable planets in that systems.

Use already mentioned EDSM and then just share your whole discovery list at once after you turn data in :)

There may be a bug with displaying that someone already mapped a body. I had that a few times, so it's definitely better to go into less visited areas of space.

Where/how exactly do you turn in the data from the planets you mapped?
