Help with controls for a Rift user
I'm in the tutorial, and at first I could control my ship OK, then for some reason I can't stop spinning in circles.

I'm at the part where it says "press J to charge hyperspace".

I have no idea how to do that, and no idea how to quit spinning in circles. I'm suppose to be aligning to a galaxy so I can jump, and it's impossible with the spinning.

I really don't want to have to blindly use the keyboard with the Rift set on.

Maybe one day I will get a HOTAS, but for now I'm sticking with the touch controls. I just got this Rift and I intend to use it.

You probably have toggled the Flight Assist Off command. I don't know how it's bound to your touch controllers, but you need to toggle it again, to stop spinning.

Flying with FA-off is much trickier and it requires a lot of experience and adequate controls.

It's quite hard to play VR games with the keyboard. If you can't afford a hotas, how about a basic joystick or game pad? You've only got 4 buttons and a stick on each touch controller. 5 if you count clicking the stick. That's less than you get with a standard PS 4 or XB1 controller and those use a lot of chord commands. (hold a button then push another)

If you play with a basic stick, you could combine that with a program called Voice Attack. (available on steam) This lets you use the stick for basic flying and voice commands for stuff like changing fire groups or activating the FSD.
Threre are also some functions you can access through the side panels so you don't need buttons assigned to them. Landing gear, lights, night vision, silent running, and cargo hatch are all available through the ship screen on the right display while the maps are available in the nav screen of the left display.
If you also like flight sims, a hotas is a great investment as all the extra buttons and axis on the throttle really come in handy in a sim type game.

As for your current problem, Dolphin is probably right about the flight assist. You might want to go into your control setup and un-assign it for now. It's not really helpful for a beginner pilot.
While you're there, get rid of the assignment for "jettison all cargo". It's not something you're ever likely to want to use.

Personally id say play the game out of VR until you get the hang of things.
In VR though, i don't recommend the touch controllers. Use either a normal controller or a flight stick. (its all personal choice of course) You might want to look into using Voice attack as well with a controller or flight stick.
Voice Attack lets you trigger keyboard command with you voice, so no more fumbling about with your keyboard while wearing your headset.
