New to Elite, Synthesis issue

I have been playing ED only recently, although I did fly a cobra back in the 80s. I play only in solo mode and initially vanilla ED (no horizons).
I find that when I go to the synthesis panel I can only use Basic recipes even though the synthesis list seems to indicate Standard and Premium should be available. I thought it was a Horizons limitation but since upgrading the problem persists.
Am I doing something wrong?

you need materials to use synthesis are you sure you have what it needs?

Keep in mind that some materials are only available on planets/moons.

The synthesis index screen has 3 columns with icons that represent Basic, Standard and Premium. I have assumed that if the Standard or Premium column has a block in it I should have the materials required. difficult to tell in game because in the detailed synthesis screen I cannot tab to the standard or premium option to see the recipe even though the standard/premium column is indicated in the index screen.

The blocks mean that these levels of synthesis are possible for specific item. For example limpets only have the basic recipe. It doesn't tell you if you have materials for it.

IIRC you can also only synthesize for modules you've actually fitted, e.g. no small caliber ammunition if you have no multicannons.

Call me an idiot, I have spent days trying to get into the Standard synthesis tab and it turns out all you have to do is use the right controls. How small do I feel right now.

You can upload it to your Artwork section in Steam, and then use "Share" to get the link to it. There link you can post here, and it will automatically show as a clickable picture.

Or if it's a Steam screenshot, you can upload it to Steam sharing directly from the screenshot, and then use the "Share" to get that link.
