Anyone got time to hear a detailed issue about not being able to scan a nav beacon if my life depended on it?

I've read posts, watched a video, even posted here myself about it. But you know those planet scanning missions? They tell you to go to the system, scan the nav beacon and the planets you need to scan will be revealed, right?
Well if that's the way it works, then I just can't scan a nav beacon, but if there's more to it, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I've been at this last night, so...it got stupid a long time ago. I just cannot get it.

I've heard it said that you don't scan the nav beacon in the yellow graphic, no...that you need to target it until its inside a grey box, and then scan it.
So I've gotten intimate with a number of beacons, right up to where I should be touching them with my bow, but I can't seem to target them no matter what my distance is...hell, I can't even see them. So I have to target it through the comms panel, which of course frames it in the supposedly unscannable yellow graphic.

Another thing I've seen a lot of, is people talking about picking up signals...matching the signal type and discovering planets that way. But no matter what scanner I try, I've yet to ever be able to come across that particular screen...where you can see the signal sounds. That's still a thing, right?

Is there someone who could explain nav beacon scanning as if they were talking to an infant? Or can you tell from this post what I might be doing wrong?

Sounds to me like you're trying to scan it whilst still in supercruise. That won't work.

Target it and fly up to it, you should get a "safe disengage" message. Drop out of supercruise. The beacon will now show up as a grey box on your radar. Target it and make sure your ship is pointing towards it. It will scan automatically.

Have you tried what the others posted in your first thread about scanning nav beacon? You say you fly right up to a beacon - did it beep at you and what does it look like?

You need to activate FSS to scan USS and bodies in a system. Here's a basic tutorial video on how to do it.

Nono, like I said, I've been so close that I should be touching it, but I can't see it. I can be 30 meters away from it and there's just nothing there...nothing to target. Sure, I can target it if I choose it in the comms panel, and can sit staring at it from 30 meters out, but nothing happens.

You can't target it from left or any panel. Point your ship's nose at it and a faint blue grid should appear. Then, you press (T)arget button to target it.

Yeah, again, I've been doing this planet scanning thing since last night and still haven't caught a break on scanning a beacon, despite the other thread.
And again, I've been right up on top of it, to the point where my bow should almost be touching it, but there's nothing there. I can target it through the comms panel and the target appears right in front of me, but that's the only time I can see it...and even then I can't even see it...I'm just looking at the targeting graph.

I'll creep toward it ever so slowly from a dead stop..50 meters....40......30....aaand then its behind me. I flip back around and try it again, as slow as possible...then again. There's simply nothing there...I'm telling ya. Except the targeting reticule...that's the only time I can see it, but the targeting reticule is the only thing I see.

Back and forth, back and forth, creeping just as slow as my thrusters will allow, and I see nothing. So...that seems to be the problem right there, although it doesn't make much sense.

I expected to hear that maybe I'd misunderstood somehow and should be in FSD, but...that's all I could really think of.

I'd rather not upload a video if I didn't have to, but targeting it from the comms panel is the ONLY way I've been able to target it. No amount of spamming that T button has ever led to me targeting the beacon, which I KNOW Is right in front of me.

Yeah there's something going on here...there's only one nav beacon, right?

Hah, that's what it looks like on the left...on my dash panel? Its highlighted in grey over there...but I don't see anything actually floating out there in space. I recognize the shape, yes, but I've never seen one. In fact, I wasn't sure that it was something that you COULD see. Like maybe it was just that small, some sort of pill-sized electronic.

Lol, luntacarsus guessed right. You are still in supercruise. You need to drop into Nav Beacon signal which you selected (not targeted) from left panel when it's safe to do so. Slow down and you should hear beep beep beep ... Then, as you crawl towards the sound within a km a faint grid ought to appear where big tic tac show. Target it with T (no panels) and then your ship's scanner ought to do the rest for you.

Hey riddle me this...how close do you have to be to the beacon until you can actually see it? Could you give a guesstimate?

Yeah that's what I figured it was going to come down to...video is uploading. You'll see me at a complete stop. I'll thrust forward as slow as I can, but 27m is as close as I can get to it without it suddenly slipping past and behind me.
So its at 27 meters that I stand there staring at it...target it with the comms panel, then "unlock" targetting...and then spam "T" right where the reticule had been. Nothing happens because nothing is there.

I got about ten more minutes left to upload.
