Gotta say 5000ly of forced travel into the black is a bit much. Even with an engineered FSD drive on a diamondback, it took over 100 jumps to get out there. Took about 8 hours irl to get out there. I know I can suicide to get back but I want to get my name on a few stars now that I took the effort to go out there. But yeah. 5000ly. One way. Why?

Go visit a big star like Mu Cephei (at little more then 5000ly)

100 jumps? Try to get lesser with neutron high way ;-)

I'm currently on a space trip to a system with 8 black holes (18000ly away), after that I'm going to a system with tourist beacon "top of the galaxy" (22000 ly away)

Try exploring. There is no rush in Elite. Once you find your first earthlike, you might just set your route plotting to economical, and spend a whole month in the black. Or longer. o7

I did it in about 2-3 hours, but I didn't do anything but jump, scoop, jump. Then I hit the self destruct. I'm to busy murdering people to spend to much time in exploration.

it took me around 80 make sure u have a guardian fsd booster on board too. i did this one. i hated it so much. and still not sure if it was worth it. since im pretty sure all he did was give me level 5 on the thrusters. i self destructed once i reached my 5k

To unlock the engineer, I have to go 5000ly. I'm on the return trip now. It did take me about 8 hours. The FSD jump in between systems is a loading screen, and it takes some people longer than others.

Take it from a guy who hates jumping one after another continuously, Palin is worth it.

I went, and then while I was out there I went out another 200Ly and finally discovered some planets, then went home and reaped the benefits of unlocking Palin.

G5 DDs on any ship is crazy fun, it is worth it, as much as anything else in the game can be worth it, for me anyway.

Engineers and their unlock requirements are intended to make players try new things/playstyles.

It can be fun to pick a tourist location or station that is far from the bubble and fly out to that. It can help make the journey more fun. The tourist locations often have unique or interesting views etc.

If you had used the road to riches you could have made a ton of cash in the process of traveling the 5000 ly.
