what happens when you get killed/ship destroyed?
This seems like a strange question to ask, but so far I'm in the sheltered area where I'm in no danger, busy building up cash.

In most games I've played, one gets killed early on routinely and then you come back to life in some way...dying is no big deal, just a delay.

In ED, I presume you die when you get attacked, you lose the fight and your ship ends up exploding. Then what? Are you back at Mawson Dock in a ship that needs total repair before continuing?

You get sent to a rebuy screen, where you can pay a given amount to purchase the ship you had and its modules back (the modules are itemized) from the nearest station, respawn in a ship youi have stored somewhere, or accept a free sidewinder. Since you don't have to buy back the modules, you can get a loan if you don't have enough cash on hand, and the rebuy price is ridiculously discounted, in almost all cases the answer is 'you lose a little bit of money.'

For reference, you can see the full rebuy cost in the right panel, just under your balance. You always want your balance to be higher than that number, but, since you can get a loan and that number includes the modules, you usually will be able to at least get the ship itself back even if it isn't.

There are a few situations in which the consequences can be a little worse. If you get a large bounty, you might have to pay that off, more so for ganking players. And when you die you drop anything you were carrying, ranging from cargo, which usually isn't a problem, to mission objectives, which can hurt a little, to months worth of scanning data, which... makes up for how low risk exploration is otherwise.

In general, don't buy a ship too far beyond your means and you won't have anything to worry about.

If you got the money to rebuy hew ship you were in, you can do that and be back at the latest dock/landing pad you started from. If you dont got the money, you loose the ship and upgrades for it and start again with a (free) Sidewinder.

You might want to stop playing a bit OP and take the time to read the manual.

You'd think this would be covered in the new tutorial area o.o

If you look at the right panel you should see an amount to rebuy your current ship, this amount will change depending on what you have outfitted on your ship and what ship you are currently using. This is also referred to as the insurance cost when you are in dock and currently outfitting items. I think it's displayed along the bottom somewhere.
I think you are sent back to the last place you were docked at. If you are still in the tutorial area then you can get the basic sidewinder back for free but once you leave or start upgrading you'll need to keep that rebuy cost in mind. Never fly without a rebuy.

You respawn. With less credits.

well its a big deal. when you have a good ship and outfitting rebuy price really goes expensive. but you can always go into free sidewinder.

Which deletes your ship.

You respawn in the last station or outpost that you were at. It will cost you your rebuy for the ship you had IE insurance. If you did not have enough credits for rebuy and you ship was distroyed. You get a loaned sidewinder. It hurts when you have a larger ship. you loose all your cargo. Fail any mission that cargo was loaned to you and all engineered modules. Dont fly if you dont have the credits for a rebuy.

Thanks all. Then there is a real penalty for death in the game and that makes me think that if I am in danger of getting zapped I should do all I can to escape the scene if possible. It also tells me that I should stick to the safe zone until I know what I am doing in combat.

Agony Aunt, you're right a full read thru of the manual should be done by every new player and I am working my way through it but as I'm sure you realize, it's hard to do that with the eagerness to get into the game.

The insurance is 5% of the total cost of your ship and upgrades/modules etc. Any crew you have (regardless of they money they've been paid) do not ever buy remlock suits and so, are never revived should they be on your ship should it get blown up.

You should be able to see it in the right panel.
