You are not supposed to learn combat in a high rebuy ship though. 90 mil is a lot. Usually people start with a Viper 3, Cobra 3 or even Eagle. At least that's how it used to be before void opals.
choose a ship in your price and find the best combination
FDL is my goto
At least the rebuy will be cheap.
I think it's important to start in a small ship and get good, because when you transition to a big boi ship, you'll need to remember all the tactics you used in your small ship, before you come screaming on the forums why your anaconda can't sight down the stupid little eagle. At least then you'll know, and ideally, know how the counterplay (hint: Boost FA OFF)
I would go for the Vulture OP - engineer beam lasers on it and it can easy take on larger ships - it's what I started on and would deffo recommend it.
It is my favourite combat ship.
The relatively weak hull forces you to learn evasive maneuvers, while the lower damage output encourages you to fight smart, not hard.
Cobra or Viper, mate. Other ships are expensive af and won't give you any feeling of challenge.
Go with the eagle. Hear me out on this. When it comes to combat the worst position you can be in is getting shot without any way to respond, the second worst is being shot in where you can respond. The eagle is cheap as dirt and has the agility to help you get used to positioning, which is key to really getting good at and enjoying combat. If you just build to tank blows and slug it out combat can become a slog and even counter productive if you are losing trades.
Combat should be broken down into 3 steps.
1. Get into a position affording you dominance.
2. Assert said dominance right up your targets exhaust vent.
3. Find new target
This is easy in RES before you open up on someone, but once the fighting starts you want to know how to do this when your opponent is actively trying to kill you. Becoming proficient with the eagle will help you learn this, and when you fail your bank account wont take such a nasty hit.
The amount of shields you can pack on that thing is insane as well for its size.
