Core Mining equipment
I started mining recently, and I want to start Core/Void Opal mining. What ships/equipment would I need for that? (Note I know nothing about Core mining)

Cobra, Fed Dropship, Asp, Krait, etc... there are many options. Depends on your budget.

Alright, what do I need to actually mine?

Ok: bare minimum, you need:
  • A refinary (usually the smallest one, a 2A, since you don't need the bins)
  • prospector and collector limpet controllers, and cargo room for limpets
  • An Abrasion Blaster (hardpoint)
  • A seismic charge Launcher (also Hardpoint)
  • A pulse Wave Scanner (utility)
  • A Detailed Surface Scanner (Size 1 optional internal slot), necessary to detect/navigate hotspots

And you'll definitely need to watch this, carefully: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5esd-dvVeFk

Alright.

My preference is to mine Painite in a double painite hotspot.

Some people prefer deep core mining.

Deep core is more engaging and active, and arguably more fun (making rocks go boom), while regular mining is more laid back.

Both are highly profitable, there are debates on which version is more profitable.

You only need the pulse wave scanner, abrasion blaster, and seismic charge launcher if you are doing deep core mining.

You'll want more limpet controllers if you are doing regular mining. For deep core you can get away with less. You also want at least 2 mining lasers for regular mining (i run with 4 mediums and 9 collectors).

On the subject of double panite hotspots, where can I find them?

You only need the seismic charge launcher to crack an asteroid.. Why the abrasion blaster?

To detach the minerals that stay attached to the core fragments once it has blown up. Not all minerals detach inmediately with detonation.

i recommend a python with g5 dirty drives for deep core mining. in my opinion it has the perfect balance of agility and cargo capacity. Abrasion blasting can be frustrating in the larger ships.

Cobra is a good entry level miner. The cobra IV is actually quite good but if you’re a new player you wont have access to it.

Personally i'm more partial to the Phantom. Way faster than Python (+100 m/s) which is fantastic when you're looking around for cores, although you do sacrifice a bit of cargo capacity.

Oh and MUCH better visibility from the cockpit with the Phantom, due to its Lakon-esque design. A must if you're mining in VR.

i dont use vr but you make a compelling case. Little cargo might be worth going faster.
