collector limpets failing
i noticed them failing many times now for now apprent reason just spent 10 limpets trying to collect 1 pice of low temp dimonds that was in plain sight with no asteroid chunks any were near it

i had 5 of them just plain fail and die as soon as i shot them out

they take up cargo space and to have them fail a few seconds and die without collecting anything is a joke

Don't take this the wrong way. It's only meant to be a *little* snarky. But...
...yer new to mining, ain't ye?

Yes, the limpets are mindless, suicidal, *irritating* little lemmings that go careening off into space at the first opportunity.

i am new to mineing but having them fail as soon as they come out the hatch is not working as intended surely

Yeah, sorry, I thought for sure you weren't actually new. I was just kidding. The limpets have *always* bothered me, and I drive my wife nuts whenever we go mining together with my complaining.

Yes, the limpets are frustrating. They like to bump rocks and instantly die. You can mitigate this by putting some distance between yourself and your target rock. Also, try not to let a rock get between you and the fragments. The limpets will always be extremely dumb, but they're way better than trying to scoop chips yourself. Also, try not to scorch the little foolish things with your mining laser. This does seem to actually kill them from time to time.

Remember, keep some distance (not too much), and try to give the stupid little lemmings a clear, unobstructed route to their target.

On a final note, I really don't know why these things have collision. If they can't pathfind properly, they're just so crippled in their intended role. But you can't have everything, I guess. Be sure to stock a TON of these whenever you go mining. You WILL use your limpets. Seriously. Start with like 65% of your cargo stocked with limpets.

1. You might be positioned above an asteroid
2. The asteroid might be rotating too fast and destroying your limpets
3. You might be accidentally bumping the limpets with your ship.

(I learned that I can't fire a prospector limpet from a ship with a longer nose while going over 100 m/s otherwise I just "run it over" and destroy it.)

Could it be that you are looking around with your ship and bumping them?
The external camera might reveal if there is something wrong under your ship.

occasionally happens to me in "open space" just salvaging and at least a hundred meters from any debris. limpet salvages, then it fails upon placing the salvage in the cargo hold... and yes, the hold is open.

Oh, crap, that's one important thing I forgot to mention. Do NOT directly target what you want to pick up. If you do, the limpet will go out, pick that item up, deliver it to you, and then immediately kill itself. Why does it do this? Who knows. It makes literally no sense, but there it is.

Instead, make sure nothing is targeted, OR target an active prospector limpet instead. This way, the limpet will keep picking stuff up until its maximum duration has been exceeded.

Or until it bumps something. Whichever comes first.

Yes, that happens to me as well on rare occasions. But not too often.

OP said he fired around 10 limpets to collect 1 fragment. So presume there must be something actively destroying the limpets in his case.

What ship are you flying and are you moving when launching the limpets. Some ships cause problems with limpets if you are moving while they are launching and returning as they hit the hull. Happens sometimes in my type 10.

Me? happened to me in a cobra mk 3, a type-6, an asp x, and most recently the fed drop ship. 1 would suddenly fail, the next one i deploy would be fine. not moving, flight assist on, cargo hatch open... not much of a concern to me, read somewhere, when it first happened, that there's an issue with it already.

My concern now, since after the update, it takes "longer" for your ship to detect its already aligned to a target in warping out. like exiting a planet/sun's gravitation, or trying to warp out during combat.

i was in an anaconda and was in open space with no obstrucion
i mined the rest of the mineing session without them imploding

i used camrea to check if anything was in the way the limpets simply fail in seconds of being fired for no reason

its happend a few times now in the past 4 days

it also only happens to me when mineing void or low temp dimonds

Bizarro.

I've not used limpets on an Anaconda much, but don't recall any specific problems. Unless it is the latest patch, but it can't be affected everyone. I've been listening to the local chat in a mining system with people filling up with hundreds of tons.

You're probably moving. Just stop moving and you will stop killing them with your ship.

mine tend to wear out before they die i always have far too many get really close to what u are mining dont worry about colliding with the asteroid you should be using bi weave shields anyway so no prob if you do then stay STILL you pew pew and let your droids collect if your circling a roid like a shark you droids will die

Are ores still occasionally floating INSIDE the asteroid? Used to happen far too often to me, which often forced me to abandon that particular ore.
