Overall though, if you are not prepared for this journey, you might want to abandon the mission.
The way i plot for long distances is to select the target. Then zoom out a little and rotate the camera until the target system and my current system are more or less aligned.
Then i go to the second tab and select the button to select the current system.
This will zoom you to your current system along the direct line to your target system.
Now, zoom out until you see stars that are close to 1000 LY from your current system.
Select one and then tell it to plot route.
