Oh Thargoids. Ever so offended by improper manners.
They may not have considered those weapons a significant enough threat to warrant a lethal response. Or I may be wrong, it could have something to do whether or not you approach the Thargoid yourself or let it approach you.
In other words, it could have just been a random preset encounter and not having weapons may have had nothing to do with it.
Ah, right, so you do have to get close to trigger hostilities. Nothing to do with weapons.

One thing though: they aren't always hostile.
And if you rush away you can observe what they do without danger.
They did give you the glow of doom though, so their feelings must've been hurt in some way.
Then that Thargoid would face a court martial for killing innocent civilians.
