I would reccommend the dolphin to get ya started if you are interested in doing passenger missions.
It's one of the best all-around ships there is in the game in fact, along with the Cobra, Python, and Anaconda (though these last two are really expensive)
If you have enough money to buy it and fit it properly, you really should do it, at least until you are rich enough to buy something more expensive, this ship is just awesome and can do everything. Be aware though that it's maneuverability can be disconcerting if you never flew a medium-sized ship.
Pros : -Awesome jump range
-Really good internals, you can fit a lot of modules inside
-Great firepower
-Extremely versatile
Cons : -You have to adapt to it's maneuverability
-A bit expensive, since you could buy a Vulture cheaper if you only want to fight, or a Type-6 If you only want to trade, but at least the Asp can do both.
EDIT : Oh and, for passenger missions, you can't fit a luxury cabin in the Asp, but you can fit all of the other cabins types, and the very long jump range is a plus when doing long range passengers. If you really want to fit a luxury cabin, buy a Dolphin, but you'll have a shorter jump range, and lesser armament. Plus you can still fit more things inside a Asp, like a larger shield, or a larger non-luxury passenger cabin.
Also, Type-7 is basically a heavy brick that is made for trading only, but you could try passengers, if a small shield+jump range+firepower doesn't bother you.
You can have more passengers in a Asp thanks to it's Size 6 compartment ! Dolphin only has a size 5.
Well if you really want to make money with passengers missions, I tried both and they'll both do the trick with ease. The Asp can do everything else better than the Dolphin though.
Asp explorer is one of those ships people either love or hate. For fighting and legit trading it's sub par but it's a great exploration ship that can last you until you pick one of the "big three". Where the asp e really shines is smuggling and illicit cargo running. Kitted out right she can jump for miles and have cargo space for days, all the while having a ludicrous top speed for its size at the expense of having no freaking brakes.
Unless you run Grade 5 Dirty Drives

38 LY for the Asp (unmodded)
With engineer mods, you can easily jump up to 45LY with the Asp (and up to 55LY with the right config), but I can't tell you about the Dolphin since I never modded one. My guess would be max 45LY for a modded Dolphin.
