What FOV do you use
running at 1920x1080 and just tried FOV of 90. Didn't notice much of a difference but then tried 100 and it look good. Was wondering if anyone else uses high FOV and what their experience are

I got a 32 inch 1440p monitor and I'm using 82.5. It certainly is a big improvement over the standard maximum of 60, as it gives you better peripheral vision and better vision above and below, which is especially nice with the full glass cockpit of the Lakon ships.

I haven't figured out why this is but it doesn't matter where I set it. It stays at the default setting.

I want a wider view but can't seem to make that happen.

So I use the default but not by choice.

Whatever is the max setting.

Are you sure you are editing the right settings file?

If you're seeing no difference, then you might not.

Anyway, file should be here (on Win 7):

C:\Users\[Yourusername]\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\Settings.xml

Make sure to create a backup of the 'Settings.xml' before changing it, then open it with Notepad or a similar text editor and change the value in the <FOV></FOV> to a setting above 60.00000 to go beyond the in game limits and save the file.

File should look like this with a 82.5 FOV:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> <GraphicsOptions> <Version>1</Version> <PresetName>Custom</PresetName> <StereoscopicMode>0</StereoscopicMode> <IPDAmount>0.003000</IPDAmount> <AMDCrashFix>false</AMDCrashFix> <FOV>82.500000</FOV> <HighResScreenCapAntiAlias>3</HighResScreenCapAntiAlias> <HighResScreenCapScale>4</HighResScreenCapScale> <GammaOffset>-0.240000</GammaOffset> <DisableGuiEffects>false</DisableGuiEffects> <StereoFocalDistance>25.000000</StereoFocalDistance> <StencilDump>false</StencilDump> <ShaderWarming>true</ShaderWarming> <VehicleMotionBlackout>false</VehicleMotionBlackout> <VehicleMaintainHorizonCamera>false</VehicleMaintainHorizonCamera> <DisableCameraShake>true</DisableCameraShake> </GraphicsOptions>

It's a little more complicated than that. You need to adjust your FOV based on your screen resoluton. I use this calculator

http://www.rjdown.co.uk/projects/bfbc2/fovcalculator.php

With my resolution of 1920x1080, an FOV of 82.5 would give me actual horizontal FOV of 115.

BTW the actual default horizontal FOV is 86 if your resolution is 1920x1080

I don't need a calculator to tell me what amount of FOV I feel comfortable with. Although, I do have to say that I would use a bigger value if I could resize the HUD and other intra ship UI elements, as there are no scaling options for it.

What resolution do you use? I suspect your actual horizontal FOV is around 90 to 100. Any higher you probably fish eye.

Guess:

I need to tweak it a bit, well fisheyed at the edges. Only just gone for ultrawide... I think 5120x1440 is probably overkill for one thing...
