Elite Dangerous

Elite Dangerous

I don't understand the obsession with the Imperial Clipper
This ship has a very dedicated and loyal fanbase. People swear by them, especially for Bounty Hunting and other Combat missions. And I just don't get why.

I fly a Python. It's fully modded for combat with about 950 shields with four SCBs, 3X Large guns and 2X Medium. I have a top speed of 440 MS and my Agility is about what you'd get from a Viper MKIV. The whole machine cost 110 million CR to build. It's capable of carrying a large cargo or demolishing an Elite Anaconda without losing a ring of shields, and it's my benchmark.

I spent an hour today tinkering with an Imperial Clipper trying to match the Python, and after failing at that trying to match a stock FDL. And I just couldn't do it - all I ended up with was a very expensive trading ship that had very weak shields and a horrible vulnerable powerplant.

I even tried flying one in-game, and still couldn't understand the appeal. The gun placement was horrific - the far guns can't converge well enough to hunt smaller targets and had to be Turreted, a grave waste of DPS. The ship itself handles well, but with it's lack of strength I can't see it ever being effective in combat - not enough to make it more popular than the Python or FDL.

So my question is, where does the Clipper's popularity come from? What makes people ignore it's obvious weaknesses and ignore more affordable and better ships?

Personally, I think it looks cool and plan on flying criminals around in it like a commericial airline but for the mafia or something. I just like that it glows tbh.

the only gutamaya that is nice looking is the courier, the clipper and cutter look like large white phalic objects TBH-and they generally suck at combat in comparison to their rank counterparts-people swear by the cutter for combat, but can u call a ship that can only turret other ships a good combat ship? i sure dont, that requires no skill to fly, just gotta plod along at a snails pace and let ur guns auto shoot everything around u, no skill just stupidity
? Anacondas and cutters etc are very capable at keeping ships in site with gimbals... My conda can do it... I think you probably just suck at flying big ships or forget that they can have their thursters upgraded.
Anacondas are, Cutters aren''t. Even the best Cutter pilots I've spoken to don't consider it a combat-capable hull due to it's lack of agility even with upgrades.

speed. that, with a decent cargo hold, makes it an excellent (if not the best) pirate ship.

not sure about obsession but pirates do seem to love it a lot.

Clipper is just an Apple - not any good, but the looks of it and touch to it feels amazing!
And it can jump out with shortened cooldown and less masslocked effect.
;)

Still not really bad ship though. Partly usable for some missions.
Boi you must have something against Clippers.
Belial what the hell are you talking about.
Honestly, yes, I prefer the python for missioning. But the clipper is faster and it's like made for mining. I keep it as a dedicated miner and the python with just cargo space for delivery missions.

I could equally argue BTW that the vulture requires absoloutly no skill to fly because when I had less than 100 hours in game I could take out an elite conda in it (I even I believe wrote a thead asking what the point of ever buying another combat ship was!) It is so easy, requires no tactics etc.

By contrast you could argue that being able to fly any of the "big 3" with mostly gimballed weapons shows that one is a decent pilot able to get the best out of their ship

the Clipper is a nice girl, very agile, even if somewhat lacking in firepower and armour coverage. But OP, why are you comparing a fully engineered Python to a stock Clipper? I have never engineered anything, nor will I ever given I simply have no time for that sort of thing, but I imagne it is simply not fair. Also comparing it to an FDL? The FDL is tailor-made to kill ships like the Clipper. Not the same price tag either.

The Clipper is an armoured, glorified trading/passenger ship, the Python is an all-out-badass multirole and the best there is (not to mention it has double the firepower of the Clipper), and the FDL is a strictly in-system interceptor.

Me thinks the fully engineered Python is also better, than a Type-7?

The most fun thing about fighting clippers?

Boosting straight towards them in a conda and they still can't hit you lol

Haha, silly, silly hard point placements, agreed. Although the top large hardpoints have an excellent 360 if turreted, I hate when a turreted Clipper is dancing around me chipping away my shield all the way.

What I have enjoyed most is using the lateral thrusters of my Cobra Mk3 I orbit around the thing nose aimed and shoot it constantly, while the Clipper tries to turn after me and shoots her plasma cannons with no effect :)

Hello there

Clipper owner here

Ships like the Vulture (Python? I dont own one) almost put the game in "easy mode"

In the Clipper I feel I have to *work* for my credits but not grind.

Its the same reason I dont do Robigo/Sothis runs or massacre missions etc, I want to experience the game not just pwer level.

YMMV :)

Rgds

LoK
It's a nice looking ship.
