Engineers are not an ingame vanity...atm they are a must. And to answer the question, if you can afford it then buy it. It has a steep learning curve but once things click then you will ahve a blast. Watch youtube videos, play the tutorials ask on here and the ED forums for help. BTW, the forums are more friendly than on here.
I'd recommend getting the main game, can always get horizons later if you like the game. And if you want some nice paintjobs there are a lot on offer through the frontier store.
