I'm so confused on how to add friends

We've been trying to add each other for about half an hour.
I go to the friends and groups menu, add a friend, search for the name my friend used in-game... no results.
He gets no results for me as well.

What name do we add?
It would be so much easier if the frontier website had an option to invite friends there like rockstar social club does.

you just enter your ingame name: realy the easiest thing ever!

I dont think anyone else has ever not been able to do that! :D

Nevermind apparently he told me to add the wrong name ._.
But it's odd that he couldn't find me on the friend search.
