Ranking Up (with factions)
Note: This information applies to the latest, non-horizons version of the game as of January 22nd, 2017.

There have been a lot of posts about how to rank up with the empire or federation, particularly over the idea of "rank up missions" and how they tend to, inconveniently, not exist most of the time.
So, in a few words, here is a collection of the information I've found in regards to ranking up:
in the right hand cockpit panel, on the default screen, there is a percentage bar next to each faction. Get this bar to 100% by completing jobs given by imperial or federal agents (for empire: they'll have a bird next to their name on the job board, for feds, the fed symbol). Simple enough, any job that says "rep++" will help with this.
Once the bar is at 100%, you must complete what's commonly called a rank up mission in order to--you guessed it--rank up. These missions state in the name that they come from the imperial navy or the federation (I've only done Empire, so my fed details are a little fuzzy). They will carry names like "imperial navy strike mission" or "courier job for imperial navy intelligence" and, when you click on the mission and scroll down, in the "additional" area it should say "rank increase: _____" with whatever the next rank is for you. These jobs only appear when your percent bar has reached 100%, and you must be at least cordial with the organization agent that gives the job to you in order to accept it. If you haven't gained a reputation of cordial or better, go do more jobs for that specific agent in order to increase your standing with them, so that you can take the rank up mission.
After completing this job, your rank will increase.
Hope someone finds this info useful :)

it is worth adding that the Completion Bar rounds UP to the nearest whole number (ie you could be at 99.1% and it will read as 100%), so it is advisable to do a few extra missions to make sure you are actually OVER 100%. Don't worry. Once you get and complete the Rank Up mission, any overflow will still be there towards your next rank.

@EHTommy if you're looking for fed missions, the best way to find a good farming spot would be to go to the galaxy map, and set filters to show only federation controlled systems. You can get fed missions almost anywhere, but they are much more common in fed sectors. Find a bunch of fed systems near each other, and fly around that area doing whatever they'll give you. Just look for the "rep++" in mission details, and look for the federation symbol next to the mission-giver's name. Hope it helps :)

I'm pretty sure 11 months is enough time for the op to have worked this out for themselves
