Well first of all, it depends on how many hours you have played. You could have played 50 hours in a year or 1000 hours in a year.

And there is no "you should make make ..... credits within a year". I am not really far on credits myself. I only have 350 million in assets in nearly 900 hours and since release on Steam. Mainly because I simply don't care about money and do mostly exploration. I prefer to do what I enjoy instead of grinding money with something I don't enjoy. I know some people are using exploits since well over a year to stack missions and make billions of credits within a week or a few weeks. But I'm not really interested in that type of play.

How many money you should make is completely up to you. Or did you mean how many money could you have made? Well you could have made billions and billions of credits.

I have put 288 hours in, But don't like to grind for money, I take It easy, and try to change roles alot, for example I've just given up on alien reseach and am now doing cargo runs

i guess you missed out on the robigo millions last summer. up to 100 mill in 3 hrs. now we have passenger and skimmer/generator missions which pay fairly well. I dont think we will see profits like last summer though.
you can still make 4-5 mill per hour easily bounty hunting in a vulture :)

What do you people do with all your billions, seriously? :) I always avoided all those Sothis, Robigo, stacking missions etc. where you could become insanely rich within a really short time. I like to have something to work towards to, a bigger ship I cannot afford yet, more equipment etc. I'm not judging you though, everyone plays the game differently and some probably prefer to get rich as quickly as possible.

Be for that, been doing Bounty hunting and bit smuggling.
But there is nothing that compare to skimmer missions, time+profit.
Doing the missions I did earn over 600M Cr, in really short time .
I play the game slowly now, knowing that I have good place where can get good money in shot time.
Want to rise all my ranks, and that require to do all things in the game,
trading ,combat and exploring.

The devs want it to take considerable time to amass a large fortune. It's up to you how you play and earn though.I have a few billion over myt accounts but its a consequence of me doing stuff I enjoy like exploring or insane amounts of bounty hunting. Never tried much trade might do that and mining for a while, but it's never for the credits always for enjoyment.
Lately cz's have payed the bills. In an hour i can make an easy 50 -75 million. But that being said the point of this game is not to grind. Even though i have a cutter i still spend way more time in other ships like the eagle. So as long as your having fun and you can afford a few rebuys dont worry about cash.

It might correlate with their real life... Maybe they have ♥♥♥♥ jobs with ♥♥♥♥ salary and that reflects in their Elite gameplay where they can get the satisfaction of being rich since they are unable to do so in real life.

I have encountered ppl like this in other MMOs.

For me it's time management. I had relatively little time to play when Sothis/Ceos was a thing, and decided I would rather have a powerful ship and use what was arguably and exploit, than spend what little time I had grinding. Things have changed a lot since then, the moment I had more time I completely gave up on it. Every ship I've bought since then I've played for normally.

The game motivates you to play and do missions by rewarding you with in-game money. Money which you can spend on better ships and better gears. You might want to get the best ship as fast as humanly possible but that is not the purpose of the game. If the game give you everything right at the start you would not feel happy, neither will you be happy if the game never rewards you with anything. The trick is to balance it correctly.

A good game is designed to provide players with the illusion of meaningful progress. Too fast or too slow would break that illusion and either cheapens the experience or frustrates the players. Problem is all players are different and some players might want the game to be faster so that they can get to the end quickly. Other players want the game to be slower so that they can prolong the enjoyment. In EVE, it is said that you would need to play for 20+ years to achieve everything in the game. How long does it take to achieve everything in ED? I suspect it takes a lot less time.

Wealth is a bit different in ED than in other games, it seems.

What's the point in having billions if there's nothing to spend it on? You buy your pimped out ship, then what?

To me, this is a bit of a boon because it shifts gameplay towards playing for enjoyment; rather than a needless grind. However, you must be able to generate your own fun; rather than playing a results-driven type of gameplay - which I think most players have been trained to play for. These people will have a hard time with the game, because you can run out of money-goals very quickly.

For example, I'm not a combat hound - so I jumped into an AspX for exploration within a few hours of mining, and now don't really have the want or need to earn cash. I'll eventually want to transition into a cutter, but that will take a lot of rep grinding - which I plan to earn doing passenger missions and hopefully turning in exploration data. (Which pays much, much less than I can make while mining.)

For me wealth is important. I do a lot of combat so having a pile of cash on-hand allows me to fly expensive ships without worrying. I also really enjoy tinkering with radical builds, again that costs a lot of money.
