What the hell are pips and how the hell do I use them?

I've been looking for half an hour, the tutorial doesn't say what button to press, I've been combing through the controls, and every damn time I google it I get people going on about some 4 pip meta or some crap. I can't click on them, I mashed every button on the keyboard and just blown up for the 6th time by the tutorial, so I have to play the whole thing over again.

I swear to god this is one of the worst tutorials I've had the displeasure of working with.

They're to the right of your ship and shield icon, staring you right in the face

It's related to your power distributor

I know they're there, but the game doesn't tell me how to change them

If you're using keyboard it's the arrows. Up down left right.

All the way up is engines ECT

Down sets them all to 2 "pips"

Xbox I think it's the d pad and If you have a hotas it's the little movable thing on the main joystick reachable with thumb

Okay, thank you. I can't believe the tutorial doesn't say it anywhere. For god's sakes it tells you to left click but expects you to just know how pips work.

I tried google, seriously, look up "elite dangerous how to use pips"

None of the results on the page are how to actually use them, just questions on how to use them efficiently.

You could have just looked at the controls in the options.
This is something you should do in general with pc games. Especially if you use a mouse and keyboard.

Yes, I could have gone through the hundreds of keybindings to find the one that I didn't know the name or binding of. I attempted to do so a few times.

As for which keys, look at your key mappings. The key mappings are well organized and I am sure you are capable of finding them within a few seconds if you were to just calm down. I have mine set to the up/down/left/right arrows.

Pips indicate how much power is going to a particular system. More pips to system = higher shield strength. More to weapons = faster weapon capacitor recharge, more to engine = faster ship and turn rate.

I could and should have, I just got so frustrated at the game after having to redo the tutorial so many times. I don't know why it insists on starting over at the beginning each time.

I suppose the reason I lashed out at the game is because I didn't want it to come across as me being inept, since the tutorial let me down to begin with. Also I had no idea there even was a manual until that guy posted it.

Since my question has been thoroughly answered and my frustrations thoroughly given vent, I'm gonna unsubscribe from this discussion. Probably better than getting a message 3 months from now telling me I'm an idiot and that it's right there on page 129 of the official manual.
