Anyway to unlock these things?

Don't buy that burger and use the money you saved to buy the paint job?

you have a free decal pack available
https://www.frontierstore.net/eur/game-extras/elite-dangerous-game-extras/powerplay-decal-pack.html

and a lot of skins at 1.25€ (or your regional equivalent). it's not that expensive if you fancy just a red paintjob

there is a way: buy a game from a developer that doesn't rely on microtransactions to have a positive return on a product...

ED is a little different than some other companies; in ED, you pay real world money for "cosmetics"; gameplay-changing items are not for sale for RL money. You can buy a pretty paint job, but you can't buy an upgraded cannon.

Idea is to avoid "pay to win" rewards, especially when it comes to PVP. You want good equipment, you have to earn it ingame. You want a pretty ship, you have to use your credit card.

I am a spendthrift with an ugly ship.

I did find that kinda ironic. Running around with millions and a expensive ship and weapons.

cant buy a new paint job.

I guess i could buy new cosmetics, but i noticed paint jobs are seperate for each ship. So no.

OP, the devs thought it was a good idea to sell you 75 percent of a game. They removed the cosmetics and the free updates, which personally disgusts me.

Dont really know why devs think its okay to sell you part of a game when you pay the full retail price for the game and expansions (updates). Oh and if you mention any of this the fan boys/ girls will come down on their high horses to scowl at you....lol...:steamsalty:

removed the free updates? Did you see how much of the the updates actually is for the base game?
Not the headline features of course, but the base game gets loads of bugfixes, QOL stuff and minor content updates for free.

Also selling cosmetics to fund servers and maintenance was decided by the early backers. Or would you rather like a monthly fee? Or pay 2 win stuff?

Free updates for Elite dangerous? You got Elite dangerous and all its content already. the rest is fixes. The new season is horizons - which is what the newest updates are for. if you want the extra content buy it. You get a reduction if you already own elite dangerous.

I won't be surprised when they release another DLC pack for a thargoid war... but I'd rather it this way than via Subscriptions for the galaxy data servers to remain open. £5 - £9 a month in subs clocks up alot more than what we paid for both game and Dlc and if you wanted a few paint jobs too.

Minor bug fixes are not part of what im talking about, that is something they need to do. I'm talking about for example, non horizon owners not being able to land on moons, that is something huge that should be available to everyone, not just those with the expansion.

Also please, dont tell me that the cosmetics are the only thing keeping them afloat, how does every other company do it.You dont see other companies with multiplayer games charging a monthly fee for their servers. Sorry to say it but you just another in a long line of suckers that belived the devs sob story. They are making a killing off all of you buying these skins and you barely see a return.

Careful. Questioning the devs actions will get the fanboys riled up. As someone who has bought paintjobs from the frontier store. I can tell you that I agree that basic color paintjobs for the ships should be included for you. I can understand fancier skins that are not just a recolor of the default skin... but solid colors should be included for the player to use.
Also... Do console players get skins? Last time I heard they didn't. I could be wrong.
Still, careful, you will get tons of no life commanders who will tell you to save money to buy skins that should be in the game already.

I agree with the paint jobs. Some colours should be earnt ingame the same as the elite rating logos.. Ie Black for smuggling max rank etc. But i guess they gotta keep thier swimming pools warm somehow ;P

Minor bugfixes maybe. But even those are not always to be given. Still the QOL updates is nothing Frontier has to do; yet they do it.

Yes. Landing on planets is HUGE. That's why it's sold as one of the headline-features in the expansion. They couldn't include it in the base game because they didn't have the time and money to refine it for the initial release. Frontier is a company, a stock corporation to be precise. They need to make decisions based on invest and return.

That being said. No they don't need all the income of the cosmetics (completely optional) to keep them afloat or all the servers. But if people had no interest in buying the expansion or the cosmetics or merchendise in the shop then they wouldn't develop the game further. That's how business goes.

Btw. most cosmetics I own I have probably gotten completely free during livestreams and stuff... lol

I agree with this, basic colors should be free. Fancy colors and such can remain behind a paywall.
