Can't Invite To Multi-Crew

I see a lot of people talking about multi-crew trolling but I can't seem to connect to my friend which I just bought the game for. When I try to invite him it just states he's "unreachable" for both wing and multi-crew.

Anyone having the same problem or have any solutions?

Is he connecting to the same group as you or are you both playing open?
Did your friend left his first system? (i ask this because if he didn't play much and didn't left the initial system he's still under grief protection and playing solo)

Ah, I think you're right about the first system thing. He doesn't even have the multi-crew menu apparently. Thanks for the help.

note that for multicrew your friend also needs to have the horizons dlc. without the dlc you can only wing, not multicrew.
