I prefer a controller. Much better than KB/M in my opinion. A lot of people swear by a HOTAS setup and they may be right, but unless you're willing to shell out the small fortune required for a high end setup, it's not worth it. I got Thrustmaster HOTAS X (which is pretty much the go-to budget HOTAS) and I was thoroughly disappointed with how less precise the stick was than those on my Xbox One controller, so I don't use it anymore. It cost me like $80, too.
The default controller layouts are pretty good. You'll probably want to make a few alterations, but for the most part they're pretty good. They'll take some getting used to though. They're not going to feel intuitive when you first use them--at least they didn't for me--but you'll get used to them.
The advantage with the Elite - aside from better build quality - is the option of extended thumbsticks, which give you the kind of finessed control you really want for aiming fixed guns and pulling off precision combat maneuvers.
I've tried a controller, but I'm not used to it so it feels.....wrong lol
Saitek X52 Pro. Got mine on sale for like $120- Worth. Every. Cent. It catches a bad rap as being cheap, but I have over 100 hours on mine and it's still great.
An alternative would be a Logitech Xtreme 3d Pro. It's not a HOTAS, but it has a throttle, is a wonderful stick, and is only like $30 new. I'd suggest going that route. I had mine for over 5 years, used it up until I got my x52, and it still works like the day I took it out of the box.
