Elite Dangerous

Exploration Rank Gain Question
Quick question, is the exploration rank directly related to how much money you get from each scan. I.e., will you get more exploration rank from scanning more expensive bodies, rather than cheaper ones. Is the rank based more on the quality of the scan or the quantity of scans you have.

Thanks

Rank is based on money. Better scans mean more money, which means more progression towards rank
^Yes and with the increased payouts, it might be worthwhile waiting until 2.3 hits if you are after Elite rank. That is, unless they have also increased the amount of profit needed for Elite.
Rank is based purely on the amount of money you have earned (gotta sell those scans before they mean anything). If you're after rank one of the more popular ways is to hit a neutron cloud and just scan stars until you're bored, going after rare planets can tend to eat up a lot of time.

Thanks Gents.
if you want to just progress quick...take an asp, fit it for long range, 1 large first class passenger compartment (and a smaller shield gen!) - then do passenger missions that are "sightseeing". Those will get you to Elite in no time. Avoid all scans (many passengers want discrecy or are criminals) and pick the highest paying missions. Those will pay better with increasing exploration rank - and it is best to be at a location where you are allied with multiple or all factions, relog till you get 10mil plus sightseeing mission from a faction and go for it (be allied!!! or they are not that well payed) You want to pick the best paying ones as that will beef your exploration rank - that is purely based on your exploration earnings. Sightseeing at the moment count towards exloration (pre 2.3..dunno if it will be changed). So with around 25-40 sightseeing missions you can possibly get Elite at this moment. Enjoy.

PS: 1st class, and not luxury! Screw those before 2.3 hits. At the moment the ships that can carry luxury have bad jump range. 2.3 will change this a real lot - but right now the best way remains an ASP (or Anaconda if you can can and or want to) with just 1st class. One rank before elite you can get 20-28mil per mission...(3-5 stop sightseeing tour, 500-800ly loop)

ps: and you´ll be elite at 156,500,000 creds earnings from exploration...OR sightseeing if you dont want to scan bodies for 2 years. Sightseeing is 4-5 days if you keep the heat on...Oh..and don´t do it if you think it feels like cheating ;-D So if you prefer to go the "regular" way... go for the pain!
I did not check what exploration will earn you in 2.3 but i doubt the boost towards earning it may get will really make it worth to brainf*** yourself with a couple of month of scanning bodies ;:-)

It WILL be changed in 2.3, they plan to reduce the sightings money influence quite dramatically, so don't waste your time! Right now the sightings mission payments fully count toward your Exploration rank. You can find in-the-Bubble sightings for 15+Mils that you can finish in under an hour, that would take you days of stellar bodies scanning to get the same money progress.
jeap that was exactly my point :-D Did not know how 2.3 will affect it, but certainly this will not last. If this is confirmed...you might just have a few weeks indeed to use this way

But since exploration payouts will be drastically buffed in 2.3 you can still get elite exploration rank relatively fast, fater than ever I would say. Unless of course they change the threshold at which you become elite. Currently it's around 156 million credits I think.
they never changed treshholds ever before, correct me if i´m wrong... Also, that would make some people very cranked up, i don´t think they want to take away rank from anyone no matter how they earned it. Think on those that actually did it with exploration. They are having a hard time making huge changes, not to scare too many away at once ;-D

But...As with exploits, FD removes them one day, or calls them exploit the day they remove them, but leave ´em open for so long everyone can enjoy them...

IIRC, your progress to the next rank could also be increased by driving your SRV on far away planets. The further from the bubble, the greater the rank increases for every x kilometers you were driving. No idea if that's still the case.

as far as i know, explorer rank is based solely on credits earned for exploration.

fast track tip: when you get back, pledge to a power who boosts exploration data returns (Li Yong-Ru) and get to rank 5. then cash in :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3r6qBKXYy44
