Bi-Weave Shield Generator or A rated?
I am close to buying the imperial cutter and im wondering if i should go for the Bi-Weave Shield Generator or A rated? I like the Bi-Weave Shield Generator a lot because they recharge a lot faster. ( I use Bi-Weave on every ship i got XD) This is also a sort of generell question about which one to use!

Are you interested in Combat or General use*?

General use being: trading, smuggling, running away from Pirates and angry CMDRs

Combat! :) (mostly PVE)

If, when you go into combat, you typically go 1-on-1 in PvE (RES sites, Nav Beacons, random interdictions) get Bi-Weave with a couple shield boosters.

If you participate in PvP or CZ, where you are under near-constant fire and no amount of 'fast recharge' is overcoming that, then A-Rated with Shield Cell Banks.

Bi-Weave is great for a shorter recovery time between smaller engagements. But if you are going into situations where you are going to get ganged up on and constantly taking fire, get the strongest you can.

Personally, I use Prismatics on my big ships, and Bi-Weave on my small ones. Big ships take a lot of fire and are usually constantly being shot at while you spend most of your time just trying to turn to get them in your sights. It's all about outlasting them. Smaller ships can easily get out of the line of fire long enough for their shields to recharge, and rely more on not being shot than shield tanking.

Bi-Weaves, add some thermal resistance and get some resistance augmented shield boosters (If you have Horizons). Otherwise Bi-Weaves will work if you dont plan on taking on multiple ships at once

okay nice! :D i have horizons, i think ill go with the Bi-Weaves on the cutter untill i can afford the A-rated!

But are the A-rated really that much stronger than the Bi-Weaves? :) (if you take into account of the regen)

Once you add a few boosters, the difference can be many hundreds of shield points. I know booster stacking is going to be nerfed, but for now, it is a marked difference.

There is an especially large difference between Bi-Weaves and Prismatics. On a large ship that is going to be engaged by multiple opponents, no amount of regen is going to overcome that constant fire you're taking. So Shield Cell Banks are your only hope. Granted, a Size 8A Prismatic for a Cutter is about 240,000,000 credits.

So.

Sounds like you mostly bounty hunt one ship at a time, so Bi-Weave works. You'll spend less time between each engagement waiting for shields to regen, and with a few boosters, no single ship should bring a Cutter's shields down.

A rated shields will be numberically stronger than Bi weaves, but if you stack resistances on either, you'll get more effective shield strength out of both...Bi Weaves will just recharge faster

Thanks a lot for your input! :D The A-rated sounds a lot better in the long term so ill go for it!

General rule of thumb is, biweaves for fast ships you can dodge on, big mj numbers coupled with SCBs for not-fast ships you can't dodge on.

Have no problem solo in combat zones with a bi-weave.

Though i do use 8 shield boosters with level 5 engineering and thermal resistant level 5 on the shield itself.
Northender Mar 18, 2017 @ 8:57am
8A Prismatic = 1,123Mj, Regen = 1.4/s, Broken Regen = 5.4/s

8C Bi-weave = 763Mj, Regen = 5.8/s, Broken Regen = 14.4/s

8A Standard = 943Mj, Regen = 2.4/s, Broken Regen = 9.6/s

These stats for a cutter, taken from coriolis.edcd.io, before any upgrades from engineers.
I use the Bi-weave and found no problems in CZ.

i went bi weave on my fed vette and engineered the ♥♥♥♥ out of the resistances and the sheilds hold for a very long time even in a CZ but on the cutter id suggest A rated if you can afford it
