Contrary to popular belief there are huge expanses of space that literally have nothing there. We think of space as solar systems and planets and this is true but between them there are tens of hundreds, possible even thousands of light years of emptiness. I would rather go through this loading screen than sit for hours in a dark empty black void.
Hollywood started the 'stars flying by' effect just so you could tell the ship was moving. Apparently for Star Trek TNG this affect was actually quite expensive so they tried to limit filiming in locations on the ship that were supposed to have windows.
I think the nearest solar system to Sol is 4.24 light years (Proxima Centauri). So at lightspeed which we cannot come close to it would take 4.24 years of travelling through nothingness (after you leave our solar system) to get to the next solar system.
For those of us too young to remember the original games, it close enough.
For those of you too young to remember heed the wisdom of those that are older.
